[A731]Assistance For Small Businesses
by Tristan Andrews, Tri
For many small business operators, debt collection is the most unpleasant task of all - keeping tabs on overdue accounts can be very complicated, and pressing people over financial matters is not particularly enjoyable. But more than the large businesses, it is the small ones that must establish appropriate collection systems - else, the company itself is endangered financially.

Simply out of ignorance, small businesses write off great losses because they do not realize that collection agencies can be economical in the long run. Hiring collection agencies - instead of simply relying on the accounts receivable clerk to act as a collector - will not only save time but finances also. Bad debts - money owed that appear impossible to collect - are a collection agencies target.

Small businesses have also this mindset that only large businesses can afford collection agencies. A business must have growth in mind, and taking steps the way your larger competitors do is one of the first steps for that. Plus, most of today's collection agencies are small business friendly. The mere fact that you have employed the services of a collection agency improves your company bottom line significantly.

Search for a collection agency offering various collection amount levels. One reason why small businesses do not employ collection agencies is because of the notion that the debt owed to the business is trivial to large collection agencies. No debt is too trivial, especially when it is a bad debt.
Make sure that a particular collection agency works within the law.

The debtor must not be unduly harassed with late night or early morning phone calls, or your business will be assaulted with lawsuits. Collection agencies must comply with strict laws, and must be one to use brains more than brawn. Four strategies are mostly used in debt collection - letters, direct contact through telephone, notification to credit reporting bureaus, and litigation.

Collection begins with a series of three notification letters sent to the debtor, most often called demand letters. The third letter is a warning to the debtor - if the outstanding debt remains unpaid on a certain day, the debtor's name or company will be reported to one or all of the big credit-reporting bureaus.
This warning often prompts immediate action, as unpaid debts on a credit report are a blemish on one's financial reputation. Reports of unpaid debts may, after all, lead to a denial of credit in the future. When all else has failed, litigation is employed as the last resort.

Small businesses operate on a much tighter budget, and a delinquent account or two can halt the growth of the business. Collection agencies are more needed to ensure the growth of the company. Tracking down debtors is frustrating and tedious - for the collection agencies, it is what they do best.

Letterhead printing is not just for big businesses. Even small companies can take advantage of the usefulness and marketing potential of letterheads for their own gain. Most small firms do not even have to worry about the cost of since there are several strategies out there that will help you keep the cost of down. So, if you want to know how to make cheap company for your small business, just follow the steps below.

Create your logo: First, since you are a small business, you may not have a formal logo ready. You might have that little sign at the shop and some little doodles here and there but there still nothing that amounts to a professional logo. Your first step here is to scan or create your own company logo so that you can have a digital copy of it. This will make it easier to design your letterhead template later. You can do the design yourself using imaging software, or you can hire a professional graphic artist to create the digital logo for you. Either way though, try to produce a logo that best represents your company and products. Save the digital copy for future use.

Compose a tag line: Next you will need a tag line. Tag lines are a good way to project your company philosophy to your market. You might take pride in the age of your small business, or you might want to emphasize your great customer service, or quality products. You can do all this by composing your tag line to match those themes. Of course if you are the owner, it is best that you write your company tag line yourself so that it also represents your own business philosophy.
Just try to keep it short and simple. You don't have to get overly technical with it. Hopefully though you can produce a catchy phrase that people can identify your company with. Once you have composed a nice and memorable tag line simply store it for use later.

Use a simple application wizard: Now using an office application like Microsoft Word, or OpenOffice.org Writer, you can now create your letterhead template. If your software has a wizard for creating headers for pages, then simply follow that wizard and enter or paste in the appropriate content. Do not forget to place in your logo, tag line, contact information, website address and any other important details. If you can try, to balance the layout and do not fill the whole header with text. Make way for some breathing spaces between letterhead sections so that people can distinguish from one group of text with another element.
Once you are done, simply save your document with the letterhead ?header? as a document template. For Microsoft Word, the format for this is the word document template(.dot) while for OpenOffice.org Writer the file format is the text document template (.odm). This is what you will print when you need your paper with headers.

Print using special paper: Once you have a design layout, it is time to shop at the stationery store for the best paper to print your on. It is best to choose the thicker and higher quality paper stocks so that your documents will last longer. Be sure though that your paper can be used for laser jet printing, or ink jet printing so that you can print your into your stock paper easily.

Great! Once you are done with the paper, simply place it into your printer, and then print away. You'll have a nice well designed and custom letterhead that you can use for your small business. Since you printed them cheaply at home you may have saved a lot of dollars because of your letterhead. Use them in your offices as useful writing materials, or you can give them to your clients and customers through official documents to improve your professional image. Indeed is something that all business can use, great or small.
