by James Hunt, Jam
What are hemorrhoids? Well, if you have had them, than you certainly know what we are talking about. Hemorrhoids are painful abnormally swollen veins in the rectum and anus. They are very similar to varicose veins but in a different area, obviously. Bulging hemorrhoid veins will swell, burn and itch. They can bleed and are very painful and uncomfortable.

What causes hemorrhoids? Hemorrhoids are caused by too much pressure in the rectum which forces blood to stretch the walls of the veins. Some common causes of hemorrhoids are:

?Constant sitting
?Straining with bowel movements (from constipation or hard stools)
?Diarrhea
?Sitting on the toilet for a long time
?Severe coughing
?Childbirth
?Heavy Lifting
There are two kinds of hemorrhoids: internal and external. Hemorrhoids are difficult to get rid of completely and tend to recur with less straining than it took to cause them in the first place. Good habits and simple medical treatment usually control hemorrhoids well. Surgery is only recommended in very severe cases.

Getting Treatment

You can try to avoid the things that cause hemorrhoids but if they do occur, you have different options for treatment. There are several over the counter treatment options that may help you. If your OTC treatment doesn't work or if your symptoms get worse, you should contact your doctor for more advice and treatment. There are also some things you can try to do to avoid hemorrhoids such as use care when lifting heavy objects. You should avoid holding your breath and always exhale as you lift. If you have a job that requires you to site all day, you can try to stand and walk around about 5 minutes every hour or so.

Doing what you can to avoid hemorrhoids will prevent you form having to find treatment later on.

Hemorrhoids seem to come from a genetic predisposition to this ailment in most cases, but the condition is usually brought on by certain conditions. The treatment for hemorrhoids differs depending on the circumstances of each individual. Most people seeking treatment for hemorrhoids start with their local pharmacist who should be able to help.

Each individual should look at the circumstances that exacerbated the condition. Some people develop hemorrhoids because of their jobs. These people develop hemorrhoids if they have to sit for long hours to do their work. Other people just sit around too much watching television and develop hemorrhoids. The people who must sit to do their job might try to get up and walk around as much as possible to alleviate the condition.

The people watching television too much need to get an exercise routine. Some people end up with hemorrhoids because of the way they go to the bathroom. These people must try not to push too much to alleviate the condition. Some people may develop hemorrhoids because of their diet or because they are constipated.

Treatment For Hemorrhoids Depends On The Individual Cases

Surgical treatment for hemorrhoids is an option, but rarely needs to be resorted to - only in the most severe cases does it become necessary. The bulk of those seeking treatment for hemorrhoids need not ever see a doctor. A pharmacist can more often than not suggest an effective treatment for hemorrhoids.

The person will want to have a discussion with the pharmacist about the problem. The pharmacist will usually provide each person with some information on the treatments for hemorrhoids. The person should have a careful look at the usual treatments.

The key to solving this problem is finding out why it is there. If it is a matter of the wrong eating habits, changing this should do the trick. If the lack of exercise is contributing to hemorrhoids, exercising vigorously for at least a half hour each day should be worked into their daily routine.

Different topical creams and suppositories are another alternative that will be recommended by the pharmacist. This should be a solution to the pain and irritation thus a good treatment for hemorrhoids.
