And if you have a dining area within your kitchen, this makes it more so. It will be the place where you and your family, and friends, will gather together and hopefully enjoy great company and great food. In all, the kitchen can be the hub of your home.

It is also the type of room that you can do wonders with if you get your lighting properly sorted out.

If the kitchen is to serve meals then it requires flexible lighting to ensure that there is sufficient light for both dining and cooking.

And as well as having the appropriate lighting conditions for cooking, the lighting must also look sociable. Not only that, but sometimes, its nicer to have colorful, cosy, lamp lighting to create a more intimate mood when you have a group of family or friends over for dinner.

Many kitchens tend to be under-lit, with only one source of lighting for the whole room. In reality, if you think about it, there are specific areas where people spend a lot of time, for example, at the sink if washing dishes, near the hob, when cooking, etc.

Therefore, one source of light simply won't do.

Ideally, having a long fluorescent lighting tube can help work wonders but will usually only solve the lighting needs along one end of the kitchen.

This can be greatly improved by fitting at least two ceiling-mounted light fittings which are placed strategically so as to minimise problems caused by shadowing. Of course, the more of these light fittings there are, the better the quality of the light in the kitchen.

The effect of having good lighting can also be achieved by using small linear lamp fittings on the underside of wall cabinets.

This has the advantage that it localises the light to various working positions along the worktops in the kitchen and eliminates the common problem often encountered in kitchens which is of standing in one's own light.

Further, you can avoid having a dark and dingy kitchen by using light colors througout, for example, if the ceiling is painted a white matt color and the walls are colored a light color, this will make more of whatever lighting you have in place, by reflecting this light and spreading it more evenly around the room.

So, although getting the lighting in your kitchen can be a tricky task, it is not impossible. Sort out the task based lighting, by fitting lights alongside cabinets and localised work areas and then concentrate on the quality of your lighting for the dining areas, perhaps by using the increasingly popular low hanging kitchen pendant lights now available in beautiful designs, colors and styles.
