[L378]List Of Good Habits
by Charmaine Pierce, Cha
Make it a habit to:

1. Check all household appliances
Faulty appliances account for nearly 75 percent of all water loss claims made against home insurances each year. Most of the water damage is usually caused by minor blunders such as a leaky washing machine hose, a broken water heater pipe, or a loose toilet water valve. This is why it is so important for homeowners to regularly inspect their household appliances. Aside from preventing potential water damage situations, homeowners who have this habit will also have an easier time claiming their insurance in the event of a water-related disaster.

2. Always check the roof for leaks
As it is constantly exposed to the elements, the roof is one of the top places where water damage can start and quickly spread to the inside of the house. Always check if the roofing materials are in good condition and are still doing their job of keeping the inside of the house dry. Don't forget to also check the gutters to see if nothing is blocking the water drainage pipes. Include the chimney and the outer walls in the inspection as water can easily get into cracks in the flashings of these home structures.

3. Inspect all doors and windows
Doors and windows are entries to the house where water and moisture should not be allowed through. Inspect if they are properly installed and tightly sealed. Otherwise, the sealants around these house entries would not be able to withstand constant rain or snow and could let water damage start inside the house.

4. Conduct a regular inspection of pipes and plumbing
Pipes and plumbing are usually under floors, behind walls, or over ceiling panels. The fact that they are hidden from plain sight makes inspecting them regularly even more important. An older house would require more frequent inspections and a total overhaul of pipes may be needed to avoid any future water damage. A $1,000 price tag on changing plumbing may initially seem like a lot, but it can prevent a $100,000 damage due to pipe bursts.

5. Shut off the main water valve before going on a vacation
Surprisingly, a lot of homeowners forget to shut off the main water valve before leaving their homes for a long period of time. A lot can happen within the time frame of the vacation and water damage can easily be one of them. This basic step in preventing water damage will only take a few minutes and will go a long way in protecting the home.

6. Use water or moisture detector systems
Install water detector systems in areas of the house that are prone to water damage. These include the kitchen, the bathroom, and the laundry room. Some water detector systems give off warning sounds while others are advanced enough to be able to shut off the main water source when they detect an excess production of water.

To pursue longevity allow me to stress these habits and points.

Diet, find out your healthy body weight and plan your meals accordingly; get your information from a reliable source. The American Dietetic Association is a nationwide nutritional network. For more information call (800) 877-1600.

The intake of carbohydrates triggers the brain activity for longevity. Be sure to consume the proper amount of nutrients daily. The nutrient dense foods are whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and skinless meats.

Supplements may enhance your health and protect the heart, bones, eyes and more. Now how do you choose which dietary supplement to take? First choose a quality, non-synthetic product. Because of the impaired ability to absorb nutrients, vitamins and minerals in food, four supplements should be taken, especially by the older adults. A multivitamin should be taken when there are fewer calories eaten to control weight and to balance the diet.

Vitamin D, there was a time when this was not a deficient vitamin, but as we age we avoid exposure to sunlight and the amount made by the body decreases with age. There is a great percentage of adult who are deficient in vitamin D between the ages of 51-70.

Calcium should be taken with vitamin D for optimal bone health. Calcium is need for muscle function and to regulate blood pressure as well.

Fish Oil is good for people who do not eat fish each week. "The 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans" recommends eating three ounces of fish twice a week.

Eat vegetables and fruits fresh, when in season and frozen when out of season. They should be eaten without sauces and sweeteners. In fact frozen vegetables make a quick and easy meal by just adding a broiled chicken breast and fruit for desert.

Form a partnership with your doctor and tell him/her any concern that presents itself. Advice from your doctor and knowledge of your body will solve many problems and prevent added stress.

Exercise is good for balance and flexibility, it also promotes good health. Exercise your brain by reading anything and everything, doing puzzles, and consciously maintaining cognitive function.

It is not easy to change old habits, so do not take the all-or-nothing proposition. Instead start by adding new habits. Decide to protect your body, do self no harm, and improve your health. Listen to your doctors and put their advice into practice.

There are many anti-aging products on the market these days. But without common sense, discipline and commitment, good health and longevity will continue to elude the average person. We are what we eat, and putting junk in will produce unhealthy aged bodies no matter how many anti-aging products are taken.
