[L73]Laser For Hair Growth
by The Bliss Medical Spa, The
Hair grows in cycles so multiple treatments will be necessary. The Duration of the cycle (i.e. interval between treatments) will vary, but typically 4 weeks for the face, 6 weeks for the rest of the body and 8 weeks for the legs. Of course patients may elect to get treated more frequently, but this will result in more treatments.

There is no typical number of treatments as each patient responds differently. The only thing we can commit to is that there will be less hair with each treatment and that the hair growing back will not only be sparser, but finer as well. Typically, an initial series of 4 treatments will yield good results, although more treatments may well be required. After this initial course of treatments, we will evaluate how many more treatments may be required if any.

Darker skin patients may need more treatments as we must exercise caution when treating darker skin types because of the competition between melanin in the skin vs. melanin in the hair follicle.

Since with each treatment, the remaining hair grows sparser and finer, we will never be able to remove 100% of the hairs. What we can do is ensure that whatever hair is left is very fine and very light in color. The patient needs to determine when the cost of additional procedure outweighs the end-results, but needs to be in formed that the less hair there is left (and the finer and lighter it is), the more difficult it will be to further reduce. Most patients achieve desired results with 5 to 6 procedures (more with darker skinned patients.)

Laser hair care or more precisely hair removal is a very hot topic for both men and women. Waxing, shaving and plucking can be a tedious activity since the results are short term, not to mention the ingrown hairs, redness and dryness that always seems to follow. With the evolution of laser hair removal technology, this is now a safe alternative to remove hair with intense pulsating beams of light for the long term and in many cases permanently.

Laser hair removal can be used safely and successfully to remove unwanted hair from the body; common locations include, legs, arms, armpits, back, face, and bikini line. The possibilities are endless. It should be noted however that to achieve permanent hair removal it may take multiple treatments. Another important note, laser treatment only works on short visible hair or stubble.

The general procedure is the same no matter where you go to get your treatment. To prepare you may have a topical local anesthetic applied to your skin to decrease discomfort and eye goggles to protect your eyes from accidental laser light exposure. The doctor uses a hand held laser to your skin; the laser light passes through the skin's surface to penetrate the hair follicle which in turn is damaged by the intense heat of the laser. During the procedure you may feel a stinging sensation and smell singed hair, this is all normal. The time involved depends on the area being treated it can take anywhere from several minutes to several hours.

Although hair removal your doctor will discuss a few standard precautions that should be followed to ensure the best possible results and help you the avoid side effects that can occur. It is normal to experience some redness, swelling, and stinging for up to 48 hours after your treatment. Some individuals also experience a crusting/slight scabbing of the skin this should to treated with petroleum jelly, perfumes and additives of other moisturizers can cause add irritation. It is also recommended that you avoid sweating (ie. Exercise) for the first 24 hours, this can also cause irritation of the treated area. Stay out of the sun for several weeks and be gentle when washing.

Although side effects are considered rare, they do occur. For instance some individuals may experience either a lightening or darkening of the skin of the treated area, these changes can be temporary or permanent. Blistering, scarring, infections, changes in skin texture and hair changes are all possible side effects, and should be discussed with your doctor before you undergo any laser hair removal procedure.

It is important to remember this is a medical procedure and precautions need to be taken. Always talk to your doctor to ensure you are a good candidate and to be informed of all possible risks. For instance some prescription, over the counter and herbal medications and supplements are not safe to take when having a laser hair removal treatment.

You always make a point of checking out the doctor or facility you are planning on using. Make sure they have the training and experience necessary. Ask your regular doctor for a referral or to be involved in the screening process. Take the time to educate yourself on the procedure so you know the proper questions to ask. Arm yourself with knowledge.
