[L56]Largest Islands In The World
by Douglas Scott, Dou
The Seychelles are located about six hundred miles from the east coast of Africa. These islands and islets are scattered across the Indian Ocean. The cruising area is restricted to the inner islands. It includes the four main islands of Mahe, Praslin, Silhouette, La Digue and two dozen of smaller islands.

The cruising area is an unspoilt paradise. The beauty of the islands will leave you breathless

Seychelles is one of the rare spots on earth protected from pollution. Man first landed on the Seychelles islands only two hundred years ago and has never harmed nature. Thanks to the Seychelles Government policy regarding environment, you will discover aboard your boat this untouched heritage just like the 18th century seamen did before you.

Mahe, with an area of one hundred and fifty sq km is the largest island of the Seychelles. There are many places in Mahe worth exploring. In the North, explore Victoria, the capital of Seychelles, with its well known port and clock tower, an exact replica of Big Ben.

Although Mahe is the largest of the islands, it is paradoxically the least known. Yet it offers some enriching experiences for those who are able to understand and love it. Even when it rains, there is always some spot in Mahe where it is sunny. Usually, all you have to do is cross to the other side of the island to find fine weather.

Visitors can linger at the Craft Village, visit the Creole Institute, walk along paths cutting through lush vegetation, discover the spectacular fauna and, of course, enjoy the famous beaches with sand as white and fine as talcum powder.

Many different types of accommodation are available in Mahe, ranging from big luxury hotels to small boarding houses or comfortable and reasonably priced bungalows.

The main island is still an unknown paradise for walkers in search of new surprises. You will often find yourself walking alone along the marked mountain paths that cross a grandiose landscape in the heart of a pristine environment.

It is advisable not to walk alone but in the company of friends. A professional guide can show you the multitude of Mahes hidden treasures.

The landscape and vegetation of the southern part of Mahe are still unspoilt. This area has the most beautiful deserted beaches skirting underwater gardens which will leave you with unforgettable memories.

Most of the population of the Seychelles seventy five thousand inhabitants live on the island of Mahe. This is why it is the showcase of the archipelagos lively Creole culture and its colourful history.
