[L155]Leaky Gut Syndrome Treatment
by Jonathan Sullivan, Jon
Leaky gut syndrome in conjunction with autism is still being researched; a number of studies and research are under way to better understand how the syndrome starts, why it can be prevalent in autistic children, and how to treat it. Simply, leaky guy syndrome is the inability of the intestinal wall to keep out large, unwanted molecules. This symptom of autism most often signifies that the intestinal wall has been altered to become permeable. Leaky gut syndrome in autistic children may occur because of increased sensitivity or allergies.

Leaky gut syndrome is problematic for one's health because it allows molecules and substances (such as proteins) that are normally filtered out of the intestinal tract into the intestines. Because these molecules are not usually allowed inside the gut, the body misinterprets these non-harmful substances as a virus or infection and begins to produce antibodies to attack them. In turn, this creates a process where one's body recognizes certain foods, as well as any of the body's regular molecules that are similar to these foods, as harmful, causing an auto-immune disease where the body attacks itself. These are merely two possible outcomes with leaky gut syndrome. Others include the transportation of bacteria normally found within the intestinal tract to move into the bloodstream and cause an infection anywhere in the body as well as a weakening of the liver, which causes more toxins to circulate throughout the body, leading to a number of medical problems.

What can cause leaky gut syndrome? Researchers are still working to more fully understand the causes, but current medical diagnoses suggest that a diet high in alcohol and caffeine intake, certain drugs like ibuprofen and antacids, or a diet high in carbohydrates can decrease the thickness of the intestinal wall as well as other possible reasons. These are just a few possible reasons, and ways to treat leaky gut syndrome are just as uncertain as the reasons. Because of the sensitivity of the digestive system with leaky gut syndrome, many parents of autistic children find that putting their child on gluten- and casein-free diets can help. Both gluten and casein are proteins, and a diet with these proteins may irritate and inflame a leaky gut syndrome - though at the moment, researchers are still studying this. You may also treat leaky gut syndrome by avoiding alcohol, caffeine, ibuprofen, or spicy foods - all of which can cause irritation in the intestines.

Understanding leaky gut syndrome is an ongoing process, for parents with autistic children, doctors, and researchers, but this does not mean that there is nothing you can do to treat it. Simply being aware that your autistic child may have leaky gut syndrome will help you to better understand and improve his or her life.

Leaky gut syndrome is characterized by the increased permeability of the gut in response to excessive irritation and inflammation of the intestinal walls. Because this increased permeability leads to the improper functioning of the gastrointestinal tract, it can have a tremendous impact on several body processes, and is an underlying factor in the development of most food allergies and autoimmune diseases.

Although leaky gut syndrome has become increasingly common and can be effectively treated through colostrum supplementation, physicians often overlook the disorder when diagnosing and treating the symptoms associated with it.

Inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract increases its permeability through the formation of large spaces, or gaps, between the cells lining the intestinal walls. Whereas larger molecules entering a healthy gut are broken down into increasingly smaller pieces before passing into the body, in people with leaky gut syndrome these molecules can pass through the intestinal walls before these assimilation processes are complete.

Bacteria, fungi, viruses, and toxins can also pass through a leaky gut, allowing them to enter the blood stream and gain direct access organs and tissues throughout the body. Some of the most common health problems associated with leaky gut syndrome are listed below:

?Weakened immune system: Leaky gut syndrome weakens the immune system by reducing its ability to ward off pathogens at their point of entry?the GI tract. Inflammation of intestinal walls damages the protective coating surrounding immunoglobulin antibodies that are normally present in a healthy gut, rendering them inactive and removing an important line of defense.

?Nutritional deficiencies: In order to be transported into body where they are needed, minerals rely on carrier proteins that reside in the gut. These carrier proteins are also damaged by inflammation, making them unable to transport ingested minerals into the body for their utilization. In a similar way, very long periods of inflammation can also prevent the absorption of vitamins and essential amino acids, leading to other types of nutritional deficiencies.

?Liver toxicity: The liver is responsible for helping to keep bowel clean so that nutrients can be more efficiently absorbed and utilized by the body. When the bowel becomes overloaded with toxins, a tremendous burden is placed on the liver and can decrease its ability to work efficiently.

?Food allergies: Because increased gut permeability allows the absorption of proteins before they are completely broken down in the GI tract, some proteins passing through the intestinal wall and into the bloodstream are not recognized by the immune system, and are quickly and actively treated as invaders. Antibody production begins, and proteins from foods that were previously harmless begin to trigger allergic responses that can damage body tissues.

?Beyond allergies - Autoimmune disorders: Leaky gut syndrome is a precursor to almost all autoimmune disorders, in which the immune system actively attacks the body itself through runaway autoimmune responses that can cause extensive damage to body tissues.

The biologically active components in colostrum are extremely effective in treating leaky gut syndrome, strengthening the immune system, and repairing tissues damaged by autoimmune disorders. Colostrum supplementation repairs damaged tissue and seals the mucous layer of the intestines, making them impermeable to large molecules and microorganisms and preventing the onset or further development of disease.

In addition, growth factors contained in bovine colostrum can have an anti-inflammatory effect throughout the body, making colostrum important in the initial treatment of leaky gut syndrome and relieving the painful symptoms of many autoimmune diseases.
