The time of year is so destined with the birth of Jesus Christ that the two are impractical to dis involve, even conceptually: Father Christmas was a 4th-century bishop and holy person; the vacations (as in "Happy Holidays") are holy days, which must give the enthusiastic atheistic suspension. Businesses anxious not to afford offense, attorneys eager to litigate, foes of custom eager to bleach and flatten all do their best to grind the day down. But if we keep it in our families and churches, and, most significant, in our hearts and our actions, then we will acknowledge when to hold it with our lips.
