There is good stress and bad stress. Even good stress can be difficult to deal with when one’s resources are limited due to chronic illness. Stress is an inherent component of chronic illness, arising from the inevitable challenges, loss and limits it creates, therefore adding more than the average level of stress to one’s life.

It is impossible to eliminate stress completely, nor would you want to, a certain amount of stress is healthy. The key is to find ways to minimize its negative impact on your life, cope effectively and reduce the excess.

Too much stress or stress that is not handled effectively can affect the immune system, therefore symptoms may become exacerbated or new symptoms may arise, keeping the immune system overwhelmed. It may also make you irritable and interfere in your quality of life.

Try to incorporate some of these stress busters into your life.

  • Don’t take on too much at one time. Say no when you want to.
  • Allow yourself to live within your limits. Don’t push yourself too
    hard.
  • Be patient, loving and forgiving with yourself.
  • Take frequent breaks.
  • Make adjustments in your life according to what your body needs.
  • Pace yourself. Break tasks and chores into increments. Allow yourself adequate time to achieve tasks.
  • Prepare ahead and plan resting periods after events you know will drain you.
  • Make love or if you’re alone masturbate. Endorphins released during sexual activity are a great stress reliever.
  • Limit your time on the phone and interactions. Constant talking and interacting can be draining.
  •  Take a hot shower or bath without interruptions.
  • Listen to soothing music. If music or sound is an irritant for you, then this suggestion is not for you.
  • Take a day trip. A short trip to a peaceful place such as the ocean, lake, park, zoo, etc. can be very relaxing and soothing. If your health limits allow take a vacation.
  • Make lists of chores, activities, tasks, etc. and do them one at a time.
  • Participate in activities that are meaningful to you and give purpose to your life.
  • Avoid drugs and alcohol. They only mask your symptoms and will intensify the problem in the long run.
  • Eat a healthy well balanced diet. Avoid caffeine and sugar.
  •  Get proper sleep- if you’re sleep deprived you can’t cope well with stress.
  • Partake in deep breathing exercises. The breath is a great calming agent.
  • Humor is great for the soul. Get regular doses.
  • Regular exercise burns stress off and helps you cope better.
  • Spend time with nature. It nurtures, soothes and feeds.
  • Engage in prayer or meditation.
  • Take frequent naps or resting periods- Naps can be very rejuvenating.
  • Vent emotional stress. Talk it out, write it out or whatever it takes to release it. Don’t let it build.

No matter who you are or what your position in life is, the way we live today means that stress management is a must and not an option. Opening yourself up to a bunch of both physical and mental health issues because of excessive or constant of it isn't an option. If you're already thinking you're too busy to start to worry about stress management, then you're the ideal person that needs to take releasing tensions into consideration.

Constant, continual one is the worst type, and most individuals today have exactly that type of stress to deal with. Over time, it can wear out your body and leave you feeling tired or lacking energy.

That creates the beginning of a cycle, as you won't have the energy to get out and enjoy the things you do like that can help you release tension. Not only that, an overall lack of enjoyment and loss of energy from continual stress affects your mood and quality of life.

You'll eventually feel like everything is an effort and you don't enjoy life much anymore, moving from task to task like a worn-out robot. Breaking this cycle is of utmost importance.

Although everyone does tend to fall into this cycle at different points, effective stress management can make getting out of this cycle, or avoiding it altogether, much easier. All of their techniques are designed to provide some kind of relief from the stress that builds and, at times, overwhelms us all. The most important thing is to find those techniques that help you relax and think through your problems or forget about them for a while.

Because of the physical aspect of it, you may not feel like doing any exercise or getting out at all, but you have to get out and do something or you will fall into the cycle. You will feel much better even if you go for a walk once a week. Many people benefit from light workouts such as walking, aerobics, or yoga.

All these activities give you an outlet for the negative energy that is caused by it. Exercise also gets blood flowing to all parts of your body and gives you some time to think sort out what is going on in your life, or to forget about everything for a little while.

Finding the perfect technique to eliminate it is going to be impossible. There is no miracle answer, and what works for each individual is very much a personal thing.

Try a wide range of activities or ways you think will help reduce it, and find out what is most effective in releasing your tensions. When you do discover what works, practice your stress relief techniques on a regular, constant basis to get the maximum balance and enjoyment from life that you can.
