Some parents are concerned about how many drugs and supplements they are being told to give their children. They have to wonder if fish oil for children does any good. After all, even though fish oil for children is marketed as being something that your child has to have and something that can help your child stay healthy and do better in school, parents can't really be sure that fish oil for children is doing any real good for their children. Or can they?
Studies done in the past few years suggest that the benefits of fish oil for children can be even greater than the benefits of fish oil for adults. Fish oil for children can help your child's brain develop faster and stronger and can help your child focus more and pay attention more in school. In fact, fish oil for children was the focus of a major medical study done in Europe that found that fish oil for children might have a significant impact on children that suffer from ADD or ADHD.
In the study kids were given a low to medium dose of fish oil in six pills spread out over the course of the day. The parents of the children that were given the fish oil capsules instead of the placebo capsules reported that over the course of a few months their children's behavior dramatically improved. Kids who previously were virtually uncontrollable were less restless, more focused, and were having less behavioral problems and fewer problems in school. Doctors found that the kids who were given fish oil for children did dramatically better on diagnostic tests then kids who weren't taking the fish oil. Some of the children that previously had been diagnosed with moderate to severe ADD or ADHD were able to focus their attention 30% better after taking the fish oil supplements for a period of months.
Parents of children with ADD and ADHD have had concerns for a long time about the side effects of drugs like Ritalin that are used to control ADD and ADHD and so many parents want to know if giving their kids fish oil can help manage the symptoms of their ADD or ADHD without having to take drugs that can have serious side effects. Some of the side effects of Ritalin and similar drugs have even been called the cause of death for some children.
So if you have a child that has ADD or ADHD and you want to try giving your child fish oil to see if taking fish oil for kids can help your child control his or her ADD or ADHD you should talk to your doctor about the benefits of fish oil for kids before giving your children fish oil. There are no side effects from giving your kids fish oil supplements but if your child is on medication you should ask your doctor first if you can give your child fish oil because any over the counter supplement might interfere with the effectiveness of a prescription medicine.
A study published in the Nutrition Journal reveals that children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder can improve their behavior with daily supplements of purified fish oils. The eight-week study demonstrated that children who received between 8 and 16 grams of the long chain omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oils per day were observed to have significant behavioral improvements.
Parents and psychiatrists observed the children to have a statistically noticeable improvement in inattention, hyperactivity, oppositional/defiant behavior and conduct disorders as fish oil supplements were introduced to their diet. The findings also remained consistent for children taking optimal doses of medication to manage ADHD as well as children who had stopped taking drugs during the study.
One of the co-authors of the study, claims that "This... study... indicates when adequate levels of fish oil are added to the diet, significant behavioral changes can occur." It also suggests that the growing epidemic of ADHD cases may be linked to a strong nutritional deficiency-the lack of omega-3 fatty acids, such as EPA and DHA. Combining fish oil supplementation with existing drugs to provide both physicians and parents new approaches for addressing this problem with children.
