[F601]Free Christian Internet Dating
by Ingrid Lihan, Ing

If you've been watching television at any point in the last several years, you've probably gotten a bit weepy at all the stories of true love discovered through online dating services. While the good news is that those relationships demonstrate free Internet dating can pay off with real and happy results, they also give the impression that everything is going to be great for you when you embark on your own online dating adventure. Well, it could be if you protect yourself from making the following four common Internet dating errors.

1. Revealing Too Much Too Soon

We've all met those people at the office or at a party who can't wait to sit down with you so they can share all of the intimate details of their life story. They don't care that you've just met and are basically a stranger; they'll tell you their complete history, including the required dropping of first names as if you knew these people all your life, too.

While that can be annoying in person, it can be dangerous and disastrous when it comes to free Internet dating. For one, you never want to give out much personal information about yourself before you get to know someone much better. We'll talk about this more below. Second, people want a chance to talk about themselves, too. If you dominate the conversation, they are likely to get bored and to start looking for a quieter ear.

2. Revealing What Isn't True

A common complaint about free Internet dating is that most of the people about lying about themselves. But let's be honest: if you meet someone in person for the first time, you might be tempted to embellish a bit as well. You might not be able to lie successfully about your weight or your supposedly muscular build but you could fib about your job title, income level, and marital status pretty easily.

However, if you're serious about making a legitimate connection, lying is the last thing you want to do. Chances are good that any deception – once discovered – will end the relationship, even if it's something minor because online relationships require strong trust if they are going to grow and become something more serious.

3. Letting Your Guard Down

Maybe you've been really cautious for some time now on the free Internet dating site of your choice but you've met someone you really like and want to let down all of the defenses. While that's a common feeling, you have to resist doing that until you get to know the person better. The moment you stop being careful is the moment you'll realize how important it was in the first place.

4. Failing to Protect Your Privacy

One of the most important ways to keep those defenses up is by protecting your privacy. That can include everything from not giving out your phone number or full name to making sure the photo you post with your profile doesn't include any clues to your identity or your whereabouts.

Although there are a lot of good and honest people online, unfortunately, just like in the real brick and mortar dating world, there are also predators. For this reason, you must take the necessary steps to protect yourself and ensure your safety.

Generally speaking, online dating safety is simply a matter of good old common sense. For example, you wouldn't hand out your personal information to a stranger that you meet on a street, and the same should be true of people you meet while dating on the internet.

Here are some basic guidelines to protect you while dating online:

* NEVER provide your real name in the beginning. Take your time to really get to know the person you're talking with before revealing this information. This should take months and not weeks or days. If the person you're talking with is for real, they will also want to take things slow and not exchange personal information too quickly.

* NEVER provide the city in which you live or were born, as this will also enable them to track you down.

* NEVER use your ISP email address or use chat programs, such as ICQ or AIM, as this will reveal your true identity. This information can be used to find the exact location in which you reside.

Instead, always use the email and chat system that your online dating service provides or use a free email account, such as Gmail, Hotmail or Yahoo.

* NEVER reveal your place of employment. This includes both the name and location. If you tell the person you are dating online exactly what company you work for, you have provided information that makes it possible for them to get your home address as well as your telephone number. They can simply call the personnel office at your place of employment and get that information by pretending to be a police officer or they can send written communication that looks official enough and get the information in writing. They could also be waiting for you when you get off work.

Instead, you can tell them that you are a 'Legal Secretary' a 'General Contractor' or whatever - just not the name of your company or employer.

* If you have children, NEVER reveal the school your children attend, as this information can also be used to track you and your children down.

* Avoid giving out specific information about you and your life. Simply do not name specific places or events that will make it possible for a determined online dating partner to locate you or your family. For example, if you mention that you're going to the balloon festival, they may automatically know that you're referring to the Albuquerque, New Mexico balloon festival.

After you take the time to get to know someone, which should take a period of months, not weeks or days, and you decide that you're ready to meet in person, do so with caution. Always make sure that your first face to face meeting is in a public place during daylight hours. It is also a good idea to keep the first meeting very short. For example, instead of going out for dinner, meet for a cup of coffee.

By taking a few simple precautions, you can have a safe online dating experience and even meet the person of your dreams. Remember, if the person you're interested in is sincere, they will have no problem with you taking these precautions. It's the predators that will have the problem and they will move on to an easier target.
