[F671]Free Home Budget Spreadsheet
by Guy Morris, Guy
It is and yet it isn't. Interior design is very easy if you plan what you are going to do. If you don't plan, then you end up with a hodge-podge of different ideas that don't work together. The home design shows don't show you the many hours of work it took behind the scenes to create that gorgeous space.

Fortunately, budget design planning is not all that hard. Take your living room for example. If something about doesn't seem right, try to figure out what the problem is? Is the lighting not quite right. Is there not enough seating? Does it always seem to be cluttered? Once you've figured out the problem, try to address it. If lighting is the problem, try moving the lighting to where it's most beneficial or buy a new fixture or window treatments. Try moving the furniture around to where it is most useful. You'll be amazed at what simple changes can do.

Try plotting out the room on graph paper. It's fun to cut out replicas of your furniture and move them around on the grid until they are in the perfect spot. It's easier to make changes on a piece of paper than by moving a heavy sofa for the tenth time.

Sometimes there's nothing really wrong with a space but you just want a change. In that case, check out the many magazines on home design. You might find a fresh new style that is exactly what you are looking for. Read the buyer's guide in each issue to find out where to get the exact product or be adventurous and try to approximate it on your own.

Changing your rooms look is easily accomplished with the proverbial coat of paint. A change in color can really make a room seem larger or smaller. Also, try putting up a new picture or mirror. Add some throw pillows or a blanket to add a shot of color. Paint departments and paint stores have thousands of color swatches so you can experiment with color combinations without having to break the budget.

When you do commit to a paint color, plan on using two coats. It's better to be safe than sorry. Even if you don't use both coats, you'll feel better having the paint on hand for life's inevitable accidents.

By following these simple steps and planning ahead, you can be your own interior designer. You'll have fun and you will enjoy seeing your home in a whole new light without spending a ton of cash.

Whether you are refurnishing a house or an apartment, or moving completely, the cost of buying new furniture can be a daunting task. But a little bit of creativity coupled with some elbow grease can allow you to furnish your entire home within even the most modest budgets. The key is to have a vision. There needs to be an overall direction for each room. Nothing is worse (in terms of furnishing) then buying what seems like the "perfect" coffee table, only to find a "perfect" couch two weeks later that does not go with the "perfect" coffee table. Having a clear vision and direction in mind when you begin will help you avoid any buying mistakes, and in the end save you a great deal of money.

Pre-Owned Items

Coming in a close second in importance is a willingness to do some of your own work. You cannot expect to find cheap furniture in perfect condition. You will have to settle for secondhand items for the most part. Invest in some sand paper, paint remover, stain or paint, and all other requisite materials. Do not be intimidated by this prospect. Anybody can restore a piece of furniture. Just do a little research, and be patient with yourself as you learn. It is very difficult to make mistakes that you cannot fix, especially when working with paint. Be creative. Study up on cutting edge techniques and paint styles that are being used for furniture. Find pictures of restored furniture that other people have made. You can take a beat up old bureau and make it look like new.

After you have gotten your vision it is time to shop around. Antique stores can be a good place to start, but often are hard places to find great deals. Anything that is especially beautiful there probably has a sizeable price tag (at most stores). Try local thrift stores. Many of them hold a wide variety of furniture items that have been donated. You should also try driving through neighborhood streets during garage sale season. There are treasures to be found. Some newspaper patrons will put up ads for used furniture in your local source of journalism. It never hurts to look there. And trolling through the internet is also a profitable idea.

Buy It New

No matter how hard you look though, there are some items that you will not be able to find in any of these places -- whether they be paintings, rugs, photos, media stands, book shelves, desks or really any other household item. If you have a clear vision it may just be impossible to meet that concept without buying something new. Luckily there are a variety of ways to find the right new furniture with a good price. Troll the clearance sections of websites. Many websites feature entire stocks of furniture that is technically on clearance. These sources can be your refuge in even the stormiest of consumer seasons. But be careful, sometimes items on clearance are not always what they seem. Be sure to read the fine print to know what you are getting. If you are buying curtains online look closely at what is included in the package. Many curtains will be shown with the full window set up in the picture, but only have one element of the group actually being sold. Read the fine print and avoid wasting any of your money.

Remember What's Important

A final important tip is to have your priorities in order when furnishing. If you have items that you need to buy new, then make sure you set enough money aside to afford them. Avoid the temptation to buy something just because it is a good deal. Only buy within your priorities and vision. If you know that you will entertain often and need a sturdy couch, then avoid saving a dilapidated sofa from the junk heap and budget adequately for a new one. Electronic items can be very difficult to find secondhand. Be sure to be careful about how you deal with technology. There are some areas where you just cannot cut corners. What those areas are is entirely dependent on how you live. Be sure to get your buying priorities in order before you jump into finding the best deal.

It is possible to furnish your home on a modest budget. The right combination of creativity, patience and proper ordering of priorities can make your dream design a reality. Be creative in designing furniture, placing it, and in your ways of shopping for it. Have patience not only with refinishing furniture yourself, but with endless online searches for the best deal. Order your priorities well to avoid wasting money on any items. Combine these three traits with a little bit of vision and you will be well on your way to a fully furnished living space.
