by Kirby Brooks, Kir

The New Zealand music-meets-comedy duo that is Flight of the Conchords is set to swoop down on North America for a tour this spring, beginning in Tampa, Fla. The tour is timed to correspond with the conclusion of the second season of Flight of the Conchords on HBO, as well as the pair's sophomore full-length released on Sub Pop (the album title and release date have yet to be revealed). After Tampa, Flight of the Conchords will make two more stops in Florida (Coral Gables and Orlando) before continuing on to Nashville, Atlanta and Washington D.C. after which they will take the stage at the iconic Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

Next up, the duo will perform in Boston, Philadelphia, Ohio and Toronto before embarking on a few stops in the Midwest: Detroit, Bloomington, Indiana, Madison, Wisconsin, Chicago, St. Louis, Milwaukee and Minneapolis. The guys will then journey to the Lone Star State, stopping in Dallas, Houston and Austin, before moving upwards to Vancouver, Portland and Morrison, Colorado. After taking the stage in Salt Lake City, Phoenix, San Diego, Santa Barbara, California, Las Vegas and Los Angeles the Flight of the Conchords spring tour will conclude May 25 in Berkeley, California. Wellington, New Zealand natives Bret McKenzie and Jermaine Clement are Flight of the Conchords. The duo first began to hone their two-man music and comedy act in 2002 while they were college roommates and was inspired by a dream in which a V formation of Gibson flying Vs reminded them of a group of Concorde airplanes to name their act Flight of the Conchords. Hailing themselves the “4th most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo” in New Zealand, Flight of the Conchords scored a high-profile gig at the 2002 Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the following year returned and were nominated for the Perrier Award. In 2005 Flight of the Conchords took a break from performing to record their debut album and released Folk the World. The album landed in the hands of the folks at the BBC, who created a six-part BBC Radio 2 broadcast series about Bret and Jermaine which was similar to improvisational acts Spinal Tap and Tenacious D.

Flight of the Conchords career continued its upward trajectory when Jermaine appeared in a string of hilarious television commercials for the U.S.-based Outback Steakhouse restaurant chain and then the duo appeared on HBO's Friday night series One Night Stand. In 2006 indie record label Sub Pop singed Flight of the Conchords and issued the half-studio, half-live The Distant Future EP the following year to critical acclaim (the album also earned the duo a Grammy for Best Comedy Album). After Bret and Jermaine scored solo acting gigs, HBO signed The Flight of the Conchords on and their eponymous series surfaced in June 2006. A self-titled album appeared in 2008 and the duo reprised their HBO role on Flight of the Conchords, which is currently in its second season. HBO's comedic duo Flight of the Conchords is out to capture the next best thing after appearing on a hit, mainstream television show – superstardom in the musical arena. The New Zealand duo, Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement, recently revealed that this spring they are releasing an album. The English speaking team are currently in their second season but aren't satisfied with a hit television series and plan to bound onto the stage with a tour this year. The 33 city trek will coincide with the final few episodes of their show and the April release of their sophomore Sub Pop album, which has yet to receive a name nor definitive number of tracks (but “probably about 15 or so tracks total,” according to the record label). The two men are relatively secure about their “guitar-based digi-bongo acapella rap funk comedy folk duo,” who have been getting coach potatoes off their seats thanks to their hilarious antics and parodies of life on New York's Lower East Side. The men, excessively casual and emo-like Brett and square-framed flannel junkie Jemaine, give the world a taste of the “low life” as they parade around the Lower East Side making fools of themselves. The show is a huge hit as it doesn't limit its audience to twenty year old media-lites but instead delves into the hipster factor complete with iconic transcriptions and a longstanding plot line. As women fall in love with their accents and men dream to have their unworldly sense of confidence (though often it reveals there's a lack thereof), the HBO series is becoming a national pastime, as will Flight of the Conchords tickets, as always which can be found on http://www.stubhub.com/flight-of-the-conchords-tickets.

For fans of the show, their tunes shouldn't be unfamiliar, as almost every episode sees the guys busting out at random moments as though part of a low budget music video. The guy's music is anything but smooth and sexy, but after a few beats watching Jemaine's sweet gapped teeth sing and Brett's skinny little hips gyrating to their awkward rap style tunes, it becomes clear why so many people love them. During one such evening that the two men are hangin', Jemaine sings Bret this song: “Hey there Bret/I see you looking down/don't want to see my little buddy there with a frown/just because I get more women then you/well that's only because they don't know you like I do/sure you're weedy and kind of shy/but some girly out there must be needy for a weedy, shy guy/they want you as the needle as they are rolling in the hay/Bret you got it going on...” Though simple in its acoustic beats, the single, much like the guys personalities, are effortless and every so slyly hip.
