Any time you're looking for a hotel online, you run the risk of finding a hotel that you really don't want to stay at. It's tough to tell if a hotel is nice just by looking at a few pictures on a website. So my first rule of online hotel shopping is, never book anything less than a four-star hotel. There are exceptions, but they're rare.
And really, there's no reason to stay at anything less because you can get great deals on four-star hotels. You just have to know how to do it.
It's good to shop around at various websites and find the lowest possible price offered on these. Once you find a good price on sites such as www.hotels.com, www.orbitz.com, or www.hotwire.com, it becomes the maximum price you would pay. But don't set a reservation yet. You've still got some work to do.
Once you have a maximum price from the discounters, then it's time to find the websites for those specific hotels. Sometimes they have deals that you'll find only on their website. If you're looking for a package deal, this is where you'll find some of the best. But if you're looking for the lowest possible price, there are better options.
With your list of maximum prices from the discount sites in hand, it's now time to go to www.priceline.com. This is where you start bidding for your room. I usually start at 50% of the going discount rate and work up very slowly. I place a bid for each of the hotels on my list at 50% (don't bid for more than one room at a time, as you might get both of them).
If the 50% rate isn't working, check out www.biddingfortravel.com and www.betterbidding.com to find out what other people are bidding for these rooms. These sites will let you know what successful bidders are getting for your chosen hotels. With all that information in hand, you can usually find a bid that will work and is less than the discount sites. But, obviously, don't bid above what you set earlier as your maximum price.
This will take you some time. But once you get good at it, it won't take long to get really great rates at super hotels.
