[A388]Alcohol And Kidney Stones
by James Parker, Jam
Kidney stones are an important human ailment that has gained popularity these days. It has been termed as one of the most painful human disorder. It is the kidney stones that are common in all age groups and both the sex. It is remarkably painful and highly problematic ailment. There have been a number of studies and researches undertaken in order to help spread information about kidney stones. It is believed that more information about a disease helps in preventing from spreading and treating to some extent.

Latest study undertaken has indicated that kidney stones have a close relation to the intake of tomatoes. It is believed that intake of tomatoes to a high quantity is not as fruitful in comparison to other vegetables. Rather, there is a false belief that the risk of kidney stones gets more, if one keeps on taking tomatoes especially raw tomatoes in diet. The study confirms that eating tomatoes as well as eating more green leafy vegetables and vegetables with seeds such as brinjal, ladyfinger does increase the consumption of oxalate which is a very important component of calcium stones. However, the oxalate that comes in the urine is only 10% from the ingested products, 90% of urinary oxalate comes from the body’s own formation. And for this, as yet, we have no medications to put that into solution. However, the high intake of citrate causes increase solubility of calcium oxalate and thereby helps in preventing stone formation.

Hence, the studies have proved that it is a common myth that intake of tomatoes increases the risk of kidney stones in a person. Rather, the truth is that intake of tomatoes with other green vegetables is good for preventing and to some extent curing kidney stones.

A new study by researchers at the University of Texas has found a gene mutation in people with a family history of kidney stones, which makes them absorb too much calcium. They reported on six gene mutations that increase the risk of kidney stones, because they cause too much calcium absorption - a condition known as absorptive hypercalciuria (AH).

They also added that people with kidney stones had a greater risk for osteoporosis because of deficiencies in the way the body handles calcium. For the study, researchers studied families with a history of kidney stones and compared their genetic profiles with those of healthy people. They found six different mutations in the same gene and having at least one of these was found to increase the risk of having AH by two to three times and having five, increased the risk by a factor of 11.5.

The researchers claimed that this discovery may lead to insights into the cause of both osteoporosis and kidney stones as they found that those with AH also had lower than normal bone density in the spine. This indicated that the mutations might be used as a marker for detecting osteoporosis at an early stage, when it can be more readily treated.
