[G491]Grass Is Not Greener
by Kathy Moran, Kat
Americans love outdoor living so much, that it often seems as if our grills, picnic tables, and patio furniture are our most important possessions. To give ourselves even more time to enjoy them, many of us have abandoned the ideal of the emerald-green, meticulously manicured lawn, and the prize-winning garden, in favor of low-maintenance landscapes.Still, there are those who actually enjoy doing yard work, and cultivating lawns that are so gorgeous that the only things greener are the neighbors. If that is your goal, there are some easy ways in which you can achieve outstanding results. If you want your grass to get really green, mow it often. This will force the grass to grow thicker, which will help it to crowd out weeds. Make sure that the blades on the mower are very sharp, so that they can make a clean, even cut, because, when grass is ragged, it is more vulnerable to disease. Remember – split ends are as unhealthy for your grass as they are for your hair.Be careful not to cut the grass too short, or it will require more water and herbicides, and become difficult to manage. Just how low you should go depends upon the type of grass that you have, but, as a general rule, you shouldn’t cut off more than one-third of its height at a time. This is what experts refer to as scalping, and the grass will take awhile to recover from it. Mowing it high will cause the grass to grow deeper roots, which will increase its immunity to disease, and decrease its need for water.Do not mow your lawn when it is wet. Besides preventing the blades from making the sharpest cuts possible, mowing a saturated lawn will compress the soil and, thus, the roots, so that they won’t be able to breathe. Then, the grass will die, and your lawn will develop bald spots. Remember – bald spots are as undesirable on your lawn as they are on your head.Another advantage of mowing your lawn more often is that the clippings will be short, so you won’t have to worry about bagging them. This will cut down on your work, and benefit the grass, because the clippings will disappear back into the ground and act as fertilizer, instead of lying there, turning brown.Don’t water the lawn too often, as that will prevent the roots from growing deep enough into the soil. Shallow roots can get tangled up among the blades of grass, and form a mat of grass “dreadlocks" over the soil. Remember – dreadlocks are as unhealthy for your lawn as they are for your hair.Luckily, whether or not you have a lawn that’s the envy of the neighborhood, when it comes to outdoor furniture, you can outshine everyone. Choosing a lawnmower is different than other things that be purchased for the home or the yard. They can be used in many different types of conditions. A lawnmower has to be catered to the type of grass that you will be cutting. You probably wouldn't want a riding mower for your small backward and you, more than likely, wouldn't use a compact push mower to mow the back acres of your ranch.

The most important aspect of choosing the right lawnmower is finding out what type of cutting you will be doing. The types of grass can be different as well but knowing the size of the lawn is key. Smaller lawns generally use smaller mowers but make sure when choosing a mower that the turn radius is sharp enough. Do you have a fence, a tree box, bushes, where you will need a mower that can cut sharp angles? Know the dimensions and obstacles in your lawn and which mower can move around them.

Depending on the size of your lawn you can get a push mower and a riding mower. If you have a very big lawn then a riding mower may be a good option as sometimes push mowers can be bad on the back if they are used for long stretches of time. But if you really want the exercise there are push mowers which are better on the back than others, so make sure you check out the different models.

One thing to know before purchasing a mower is if you want to bag the grass as it is cut or afterwards. If you have a smaller lawn than a bagged mower is a good option as it bags up all the grass as it is cut. On larger lawns the bags can become full quicker and slow the mower down.

So know the size of your lawn and pick the lawnmower that will suit it, and you, best. You can also ask a professional at a lawnmower retailer as they should ask you what kind of lawn you have before buying the lawnmower.
