[A476]Aluminum Or Vinyl Windows
by John Ca. Baker, Joh
When we think of home improvements many of us do not think of the shutters that are in our homes. In most cases the first thing that we think about is how we are going to update certain things or painting. What about a new kitchen? We very rarely think of vinyl shutters. These however can be a huge home improvement consideration for you to consider. In many cases if there are shutters on our home they are wood if they are original. This makes them a very high maintenance item and very easy to neglect. For most of us we do not think of our shutters when we clean or pretty much ever. That is why it is so much easier to go the vinyl route. They are easy to clean, do not require to be painted and can add value to a home for sale. What is there not to like about them. On top of all of that they are also fairly easy to install.

Another product that we do think about, but generally do not want to in home repair are windows. In many cases we will need to replace windows at least once in one of the homes that we will own. It is just a fact of life. It makes the most sense when you do have to replace the windows in your home that you choose vinyl for these as well. There are many reasons for this. The first of which is the durability factor. Nylon is fairly resilient and will hold up longer than wood. Aluminum is very weak and fragile and wood just does not seem to hold up over a long period of time when it has to deal with the elements. Vinyl again does not need to be painted is fairly weather proof and will require little to no maintenance save for having to be wiped down periodically with soap and water.

So in general the nylon products for both shutters and windows appear to be a superior item top pick from. You can even get them for the most part in custom colors and the windows will help with your heating and cooling bills as well. This is because of the fact that they will seal so much better than the wood or aluminum ones will. So go with vinyl and make you and your home happier for a long time and possibly the next homeowner as well.

Choosing the right vinyl replacement windows for your home can be tricky business if you don't know what brand to look for or what the best features are. You also need to think about which style will fit each room of you home the best. Some rooms will look and function better with traditional double hung windows and other rooms like kitchens, should have bow, bay or garden style windows.

The reason choosing the right windows makes so much of a difference is simple, they cost a lot of money and you don't want to re-spend that amount twice for the same house Selecting a quality window with high energy efficiency ratings will also lower your monthly heating and cooling costs so you start earning back your investment.

As for which windows are the best that is a matter of opinion. I've never heard a contractor, distributor or associate at a home improvement store say the windows they sell aren't the best. And in there defense, they aren't lying or trying to mislead you, not all of them anyway, that is just what they have been told by the manufacturer's sales reps and who are they to say different.

Another point worth mentioning is there are many different brands of windows out there that are made very well. But, it is not just the brand you have to look at. Every manufacturer makes several levels of their product to meet various budgets. So just because a window is a certain brand, that doesn't mean the specific series you're looking at is a great window.

There are certain things to look for in a window, including energy efficiency, construction, style and most importantly, warranty. A quality window will rank high in all of these categories, not just one or two. When comparing windows, rank them in each of these main four categories with a score of one to five and see how they total up. Also, if a window doesn't score at least a 3 in each, don't even consider using it.

Make sure to look for Energy Star qualified windows as well. Any replacement window that meets their standards should receive a high score in that category. You should also consider a few other things like low maintenance and easy cleaning. These two factors may be the determining factor if several of the ones you're looking at appear equal in terms of the four main considerations described above.

Now there is another thing you should really consider, and that is the installation. Most home owners are not capable of installing vinyl replacement windows so a professional will be needed. And I highly recommend choosing one even if you think you are up to the task. A pro and I mean a real professional with good references whose installers have been trained to do the job right, will have all of the proper tools and equipment along with the knowledge of how to install windows without voiding the warranty.

So do your research and find a window company that has clients who will vouch for the workmanship and work habits of company's staff, both salesman and installers. It is also best if you can find a window company that offers a window that meets your requirements in addition to just installation. This ensures they hold full responsibility for the work and product.

In summary, just make sure you choose your windows and installer carefully and do your homework before making any final decisions. Remember, cheap cost does not mean good value, it means only what the name implies, cheap.
