[G318]Go Back To School
by Wes Robertson, Wes
Just about anything a school might need to purchase over the course of a year could also bear the school's mascot, but they frequently don't. The unfortunate fact is that there are many schools that do not take promotional products into consideration when they are drawing up their annual budgets, when they really should. This might not be much of a surprise, because many schools don't realize that the industry has more than pompoms and jerseys that they can imprint a school mascot on.

The promotional items market is tremendous, and there is a wide variety of school-related items that can be found. Just as in the case of a business gift, a good student gift or reward will not just be inexpensive but will be something students can use. A well made binder and folders to go with the binders that are embroidered with an image of the school’s mascot would encourage both school and academic pride. The promotional items industry doesn't just make leather tote bags or messenger bags that are only suitable for business execs, either. While they definitely do have those available, there are also backpacks fit for students of all ages available to be imprinted. A backpack is something any student can use in a modern school setting as the number of schoolbooks they carry around increases each year.

Even if a school is working with limited budget, it can even find quality basic supplies available at relatively cheap prices. Opportunities to save money in this manner can be found across a broad spectrum of grades, from kindergarten to high school or later. Crayons, glue, and scissors are common requirements in early grade school years. Supplies for the later grades, or even the school office, are available as well: rulers, pens, pencils, and paper.

Not only are these products often cheaper, at least one imprint will be probably be included in the price, too! This is an important part of the promotional industry for purchasers to take advantage of. As items bearing a school’s colors or mascot inevitably make their way through a community, the school becomes a piece of the fabric that binds the community together.

School size doesn’t really matter, either. Even a small elementary school or junior college can be a matter of pride for the surrounding community. Having gifts or donated items with school logo on them will help establish this vital symbiotic relationship and contribute to an interest in the welfare of the school’s students.

In high school and college, students love to show their school spirit and can do so with customized promotional products. Using a branded product can form a connection between the student and school, and students who feel a connection to their school inspired to make better grades. A customized product bearing the mascot they grew up with is an excellent memento of an unforgettable school experience.

Many organizations, businesses and schools purchase office and school supplies at their local supply store off the shelf when in reality the low cost of getting a pencil with a logo or backpack with a mascot could provide budgetary savings and extend the school's brand into the community.

You aren't. It really is that simple. I don't care what your age is, as an experienced college-level educator I can assure you that you are not too old, because there are many nontraditional students on college campuses today (and likely some of those are older than you are), your life experience gives you many advantages over more traditional students, and with the growing nontraditional population many colleges have programs and services especially tailored for the nontraditional student.

I went back to school in my 30s and today I teach college. Yes, I have many traditional students in my classroom but every semester I have a large percentage of nontraditional students as well. I have studens in their late 20s as well as 30s, 40s, 50s, and up. I have students who have retired from one career and are looking to move into another. I have students whose children (or grandchildren) have left the nest so they are looking to enter a new stage in their life.

I also have many students balancing school with work and family. I have students who are the traditional age but are in nontraditional circumstances including children and family, work and military service, as well as sports and other activities. You are a unique person, but your situation is not as unique as you might think.

In many ways, your age, or rather your life experience, will be a tremendous asset for your return to school. Nontraditional students understand much better than traditional students how to manage their time and prioritize tasks. In addition, nontraditional students are often much more motivated and goal-oriented than their more traditional counterparts. Finally, your life experience also gives you a great deal of knowledge and experience to fall back on or pull from when it comes to understanding, applying, or adapting the new knowledge you gain through college. I regularly see my nontraditional students outperform traditional students in many ways, but it ultimately comes down to a maturity of thinking and reasoning that can only come with growing up. I know when I returned to college as a student after working for a number of years that I did much better in the classroom and also handled my work load much better than I did when I was a more traditional student.

Today colleges recognize they have a changing student population and offer classes in a variety of formats including on campus, off campus, televised, and internet as well as a range of schedules including days, nights, weekends, and accelerated. In addition, there are now support services available for students who fall outside the traditional student role. Many financial aid and scholarship programs also exist specifically for the nontraditional student.

In the end, it really comes down to your own gut feeling. Do you really want that degree? Are you ready to change your life? You can do it and there will be help and support available for you. Don't use your age as an excuse not to pursue your dream.
