[H4]Hailstorm Band I Get Off
by Joseph Hanoa, Jos
Lasik surgery allows many people to escape wearing contact lens and/or glasses, even if they've worn them all of their lives. It is used in the treatment of refractive vision problems. The word Lasik means laser assisted in situ keratomileusis. It is a very popular form of treatment today because there is little pain associated with it and because it produces good results. It is a quick form of surgery taking about fifteen minutes per eye. Lasik surgery is only good for three forms of vision problem. Myopia is knows as near-sightedness. This means that the light is refracting is such a way that distant objects are blurry. Hyperopia or far-sightedness is the opposite. People can't focus clearly on near items, but their distance vision is fine. Astigmatism is a focusing problem that results in blurred vision.

The Lasik procedure is rather simple. The patient's eyes are examined prior to surgery and are measured and mapped. This allows the physician to determine the correct amount of tissue to remove. The surgery takes place with the patient awake. The physician begins by making a flap in the covering of the eye. This can be accomplished with a knife or with a laser. The laser, which is generally preferred by patients, is directed by a pre-programmed computer to make the flap. Once the flap is made it is pulled back to reveal the cornea. The physician uses a different laser to remove corneal tissue. The amount to be removed is determined by the pre-surgery design and eye mapping. When this is finished the flap is put back in place and the eye heals. Most patients have an immediate improvement in their vision although it may take up to six months before the full effects are known. The result is often perfect or near perfect vision for the patient who no longer needs glasses or contact lens. The laser reshapes the cornea. This causes the light to refract differently through the eye to the retina correcting one, two or three of the vision problems discussed above. This is usually a permanent solution to these problems. People who have Lasik surgery throw away their glasses and contact lens for good.

Lasik surgery is rarely covered by insurance although some plans are beginning to cover some of it. Check around when looking for a physician to perform the Lasik surgery. The clinic closest to your house is not always the best.

For example: A man wants to be an extreme fighter, so he gets a manager and takes lessons. His manager will not put him into a bout until he has developed enough stamina and skill. And even then, the manager will only put him up against a competitor that he knows his fighter can beat. When his fighter beats the rival, he is successful, and starts to gain belief in his abilities.

With each challenge, the manager puts his warrior up against a competitor who is a slightly better rival then the last, but not good enough to beat his man. By the end of the third fight, the young contender begins to expect to win his fourth, and so his confidence continues to escalate. This scenario continues to repeat itself. And as long as the contender continues to win, his expectations of success, and his feelings of self-confidence will continue to escalate.

If a person who has a long history of success and feelings of self-confidence does fail, they still tend to expect success the next time out. Conversely, when a person who is weak in the self-confidence department fails, they tend to lose confidence, and begin to expect failure, which can become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Having self-confidence doesn't mean that individuals will be successful at everything. People, who have true self-confidence, usually have expectations that are down-to-earth. Even when some of their expectations are not met, they continue to be positive and to accept themselves.

People, who are not self-confident, tend to rely unreasonably on the agreement of others in order to feel self-esteem. They tend to avoid taking risks because they fear failure. They often put themselves down and tend to discount or ignore compliments that they do receive.

On the other side of the coin, self-confident people are willing to risk the disapproval of others because they generally trust their own abilities. They tend to accept. A lack of self-esteem is often the result of focusing much too strongly on the unrealistic expectations of others, especially parents and friends. The power of friends can be more powerful than those of parents in shaping the feelings about one's self.

Assumptions That Continue to Influence Self-Confidence

In response to external influences, people develop beliefs; some of these are constructive and some are harmful. Several assumptions that can interfere with self-confidence and better ways of thinking are:

ASSUMPTION: I always have to be successful at everything that I do. This assumption is unrealistic. In real life, each person has his strengths and his weaknesses. While it's important to do the best that you can, it's more important to learn to accept the self as being human, and fallible. Feel good about what you are good at, and accept the fact that no person knows everything nor are they an expert at everything.

ASSUMPTION: I must be perfect, and loved by everyone, and satisfy everyone. Again, this assumption is unrealistic. All human beings are deficient. It's better to develop personal standards and values that are not completely dependent on the approval of others.

ASSUMPTION: Everything that happened to me in the past remains in control of my feelings and behaviors in the present.

ALTERNATIVE: While it is true that your confidence was especially subject to external influences during your childhood, as you gain maturity, you can gain knowledge and a new point of view on what those influences have been. In doing so, you can choose which influences you will continue to allow to have an effect on your life. You don't have to be helpless in the face of past events.

HERE ARE SOME STRATEGIES FOR DEVELOPING CONFIDENCE

Emphasize Your Strengths. Grant yourself credit for everything you can do. And give yourself credit for every new adventure that you are willing to try.

Take risks. Adopt the attitude of: I never fail, because there are NO failures. However, sometimes I find out what does not work, and once I've learned what doesn't work in a given situation, I can try some other action.

Use Self-Talk: Use an inner dialog with yourself and counter harmful assumptions. Then, tell yourself to stop. Substitute more reasonable assumptions. For example, when you catch yourself expecting yourself to be perfect, remind yourself that it's impossible to do everything perfectly, and that it's only possible to do things to the best of your ability. This allows you to accept yourself as you are improving.

Make mental movies: Visualize yourself in the various scenarios that you currently lack confidence in. But see yourself behaving as like a person who has tremendous self-confidence would. There are many NLP and Hypnosis procedures that you can use to create a monumental amount of confidence from within your subconscious mind. There are even NLP techniques that will let you take confidence that you do have in areas of your life, and then transplant that confidence to areas of your life that are lacking confidence!

Self-Evaluate: Learn to judge yourself as an individual. Bypass the habitual sense of chaos that comes from relying on what other people think.
