[G578]Guide To Pest Control
by Darren K. Thompson, Dar
When searching for a quality pest control company make sure to do your homework. A treatment by an under qualified or dodgy company could result in your pests reappearing after a week or two or even unbelievably make your pest problem worse! So before you hand over your hard earned cash here is a few questions that are worth asking.
How experienced are you? Some companies specialize in different things; some go for rodents, others for wasps and ants, and others get into more esoteric things. When it doubt, try to find a pest control company that specializes in the kind of vermin you're seeing.
What organizations do you belong to? Most reputable pest control agencies belong to a local or national organization of some sort. One organization that many excellent pest control companies belong to is the National Pest Management Association. Belonging to this association means that you are dealing with an established business that holds to a specific code of ethics and has met certain qualifications.
Will your methods pose any danger to my children or pets? Once you've narrowed down their specialty, it's time to ask the nitty gritty questions. What methods will they be using? Are they potentially lingering, hazardous to pets or children, or prone to emitting vapours or fumes? What alternatives are there? Be wary of pest control companies that get dismissive of these types of questions.
Do you have references? Check any references the Pest Company may have - talk to customers they've serviced before, particularly customers you know directly. Good testimonials are a good indicator of good service levels.
Can I have it in writing? When the company that you are considering does an inspection, they should be willing to give you a piece of paper that tells you were the problems and infections are occurring. This will let you cross-check with another service to make sure that you are getting good information.
Are they pushy? Any pest control service that's trying a pushy or hard sell is a dead giveaway. Nothing, short of absolutely dire circumstances, should require an immediate decision. For most pest control problems, getting everything settled in a week or even two is more than sufficient. Any pest control company trying to get you to jump quickly on a deal is probably trying to get you to overlook something, or to scare you into paying more.
Have I called the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (or Better Business Bureau in the US)? If you suspect that a pest control company is not everything that it says it is, check with the ACCC. They will tell you if there have been many complaints against this company or if there have been any problems in the past. They may also be able to put you in touch with a regulatory board that oversees pest control companies in your area specifically.
As with any professional service, it pays to shop around and ask questions. Good luck and happy hunting!

If you know someone who has had the services of a pest control company, you should go ahead and ask him or her who they would recommend. Most people will be happy to tell you which one to contact and which one to avoid. In case you don't have any referral of a good service, you will have to pick a list of potential services from your local Yellow Pages directory. Or else you can search the internet for a local pest control service.

Once you have a list of local pest control services, make a few phone calls and get a service on the line. Ask them the following questions before hiring them.

How long have they been in business?

It is a good sign of how good a company is since the bad ones cannot survive long. But this is not the only factor to judge a company though. You must realize that every company has to start somewhere.

Are they licensed and insured?

Most pest control companies are required to have a license. But there are certainly many who operate without one. Make sure the company you are going to hire is licensed. If you are in doubt, ask for proof.

Do they have any references?

If a company is providing a good service to its clients, they will likely have a couple people who they can give out for a reference. Make sure you ask for the references and check them. You would be surprised how many companies give out names of unsatisfied clients. So check the references.

Hence, before you hire a pest control company, make sure they have a good time in business, licensed and have a few references that you can contact for their quality.
