According to the letter sent by Honda Motors, maker of quality Honda parts to NHTSA dated January 9, the wiring harness for the seat position sensor of the 2004-2005 Honda Accord which supposedly detects the driver's seating position and adjusts the air bag inflation pressure accordingly, was attached in the wrong location and may have been over tightened as well.

Honda believes that the sensor wire could break and could cause the air bag warning light to be illuminated and prevent the sensor from working properly. This could be fatal especially during a crash since the airbag may tend to inflate at full pressure thus increasing the risk of injury from the airbag for smaller drivers particularly in a frontal crash.

According to Chris Naughton, Honda spokesman the company have not yet heard of any injuries or incidents connected to the recall. Accidents or no accidents, the recall will start in early February. Dealers will replace the seat position sensor wiring sub-harnesses added Honda.

And for those who own one of these cars, if ever your airbag warning light is currently illuminated don't wait for the recall and take your car to your local Honda dealer as soon as possible.

Here is the NHTSA text of the recall:
HONDA / ACCORD 2004-2005

Recall Number: 07V001000
Summary:
ON CERTAIN VEHICLES, THE SEAT POSITION SENSOR (SPS) DETECTS THE DRIVER'S SEATING POSITION AND ADJUSTS THE AIR BAG INFLATION PRESSURE ACCORDINGLY. THE WIRING HARNESS FOR THE SPS WAS ATTACHED TO THE SEAT FRAME IN THE WRONG LOCATION AND MAY HAVE BEEN OVER TIGHTENED. THE SENSOR WIRE MAY BREAK AND CAUSE THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT TO BE ILLUMINATED, AND THE SPS TO FAIL.
Consequence:
A FAILURE OF THE SPS CAUSES THE AIR BAG SYSTEM TO DEFAULT TO FULL INFLATION PRESSURE, REGARDLESS OF THE SEAT POSITION. FULL DEPLOYMENT OF THE DRIVER'S AIR BAG CAN INCREASE THE RISK OF INJURY FOR SMALLER DRIVERS IN A FRONTAL CRASH.

Remedy:
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE SEAT POSITION SENSOR WIRING SUBHARNESS. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING EARLY FEBRUARY 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HONDA AT 1-800-999-1009.
