[H1701]How To Treat Cradle Cap
by Addam Devin, Add
Cradle cap generally occurs on the head of a baby. The areas that are most prone to the disease are the top of the head, the area along with eyebrows, eyelids etc. And different affected areas have different means of treatment. When the disease occurs along the eyelids, the typical medical advice is to use diluted baby shampoo on a cotton swab to cleanse the affected area.

There is no certainty with regard to the proportion of dilution. It may range from a few drops to half cup warm water or even it may be a fifty/fifty mix. Though no specific studies have been made on the efficacy or safety of this treatment, it has been found fruitful in treating cradle cap. However, it cannot be ignored that there is problems in using shampoo in the affected area. Shampoo contains a detergent that is supposed to cause harm to the baby.

Generally, when comparing soap and baby shampoo to commercial eyelid scrubs, parents strongly preferred not to put soap or shampoo on the affected area. Baking soda has also been recommended is a means of treating cradle cap when it occurs near eyelids. A teaspoonful of soda can be added to a cup of boiled water and applied on the place. It is a popular method of treating the skin condition.

Whatever may be the method of treating cradle cap, it must be kept in mind that the disease is not an infectious one and there is no chance that it would take a bad turn and cause harm to the baby or contaminate those who come near to it. The disease may get well automatically but in between it should be managed properly. Parents should ensure that they take measures to keep the disease under control by being careful.

The appearance of a scaly crust on the scalp of the baby can be worrisome for many parents. In fact, they need not, because it is a harmless skin condition that may appear at the age of two months and disappear latest by two years. And another matter of fact is that if you take just a little care of the baby, it would disappear very quickly. It is treatable totally within a few weeks.

If cradle cap symptoms spread out towards other parts of the face, it is then referred to as seborrheic dermatitis. If it is not taken care of well, it may eventually lead to indications of atopic dermatitis. This is the time when you seriously need to consult a dermatologist.

But let us, at first, recognise the symptoms of and possible causes. Although no one is really certain about the cause of this skin condition, it is attributed to the over activity of the sebaceous glands and thereby secretion of excessive oil by these glands. This causes inability of the skin cells in the infant to shed properly. And this is why there is this dandruff-like flaky thick yellow waxy crust formation on the skin.

Although there is no danger in that this skin condition is not contagious in form, parents need to exercise care and caution. The treatment for cradle cap is easy enough. Mild shampooing, and especially so, before bedtime for the baby works well. The shampoo helps to soften and loosen the scales, and the flakes can then be combed off with a soft brush in the morning.

If shampooing even with medicated shampoos such as those containing salicylic acids, selenium sulfide and zinc pyrithione is effective enough to treat cradle cap in your baby, it may be advisable to apply herbal creams such as Clearskin-E Cream or else as per the prescription of your dermatologist, steroid lotions may have to be used.
