[H1388]How To Make Glycerin Soap
by Anne Harvester, Ann

Glycerin soap is one of many safe personal care products that may be more appropriate for people with sensitive and/or delicate skin. In an increasingly toxic environment, more and more of us are finding our resistance strained to its limits. such as glycerin soap are one solution to maintaining a healthy level of hygiene while guarding one's health.

What Glycerin-Based Soap Is

You may have seen glycerin soap and even used it before without realizing what it was. You can recognize it however, because it is usually transparent and has a rich, dark amber color.

This particular product is made with glycerol (hence the name), which is a naturally-occurring biochemical substance that is a component of fats and oils. It is in fact a form of sugar alcohol inside our bodies it acts as a solvent that helps to down the nutrients from the food we eat into a usable form of energy; without glycerol, we would literally starve to death even if we were full.

Glycerol is extracted from animal fats or (preferably) vegetable oils through the rendering process which involves the use of lye. Most manufacturers of mass-produced commercial soaps remove the glycerol. However, in most homemade and artisan-crafted soaps (such as you might purchase at a local farmer's market), glycerin is a primary ingredient.

Commercial Soap May Be Hazardous To Your Health!

If you are suffering from dry flaky skin despite the constant application of emollients and frequent bathing, it could be due to the nature of the soap you are using. In this case, the solution could very well be such as glycerin soap.

Mass-produced commercial soap that is usually sitting on the shelves of your local grocer or department store is not actually soap - it's a form of detergent. Instead of natural vegetable oils, these 'detergent soaps' are actually made from petroleum - which is the primary ingredient of the gasoline that fuels most motor vehicles! In addition, these types of 'soaps' retain the caustic lye used in processing and often contain unhealthy forms of alcohol as well as potentially toxic dyes and irritating perfumes.

Why Switch to Glycerin?

If you've ever used rubbing alcohol on your skin, you know how it evaporates quickly (which is why it is useful as a coolant), carrying moisture off almost as fast and leaving your skin very dry.

Glycerin soap on the other hand is what is known as a humectant - it actually attracts moisture, leaving your skin hydrated and supple. It is also useful in relieving the symptoms of skin disorders such as eczema and psoriasis. Reputable firms who make this kind of soap use vegetable-based oils as well - not animal fats. Therefore, you can be assured that by using glycerin soap, you'll not only being doing something positive for your skin, but the planet as well.

Glycerin soap making is probably the easiest method of making soaps compared to the other general soap making techniques. This way you can make the soaps very quickly. Glycerin is a material that has always been popular for the moisturizing properties. It gets dissolved in water pretty easily and often considered to be a good solvent.

Traditionally Glycerin was used as a byproduct in soap production. The homemade soaps with Glycerin in it are the best ones to use. You can purchase the Glycerin for soaps from various stores that sell the candle and soap ingredients as well as the Internet have a number of online stores.

The other materials that you need for Glycerin soap making are soap base, molds, additives and fragrance and oil. First of all you need to boil the soap bases taking them into a container. You can either use a microwave oven for this and in case of large-scale production you can try out a double boiler.

Never forget to cover the container or else the extra moisture will get evaporated and the base will become dry. If you prefer to use the microwave then you need to stir the base after certain intervals to mix the base pieces, which have not melted yet. While using a double boiler simply boil the water and add the base in it.

You can walk away but at the same time keep an eye on the container to check whether the base is already melted or not.

You can add the fragrance and colors of your choice during the procedure. The colors should be added in a small quantity like 1/8th of a teaspoon and never use excess which can result into over staining and can also spoil your hand and the towels that you touch. The fragrances are added at a quantity of around .25v ounce to each pound of base and keep stirring so that it gets dissolved completely.

When Glycerin is added in the base the melting will take time according to the melting point of the raw Glycerin. Usage of Glycerin can result into a clear soap, which is often liked by everybody. Your kid is going to love it if you can put a small toy inside the soap bar. Once the base is melted and all the additives are added to it, you can pour the mixture in to the molds at warm condition. It will take a few hours to cool of and then you can use them or even gift to the friends on various occasions.

Now you need to be careful while buying the Glycerin for your soaps, as there are different qualities available with different suppliers. If the store from where you are buying the glycerin is not an authentic one then there can be impurities present in it.

So select the glycerin that is clear and pure as this is the most important part of Glycerin soap making.
