by Amanda Maseko, Ama
Could anything be better than a wonderful romantic setting when you are in love? Often, people have a tendency of using accessories so that they can capture the essence of relaxation and romance. Somehow candles and flowers are so much a part of romance.
Maybe it's because the flickering glow of a candle relaxes you that it feels so romantic. What could heighten the mood and the senses is to have candles that are fragrant and colored. Alluring as these may be, they can turn out to be costly when used on a regular basis. The one way to enjoy these candles on a regular basis is to make them yourself.
This can be done by placing some old candles in a vessel and then placing this vessel in a bigger vessel containing water and put this on a fire. The water will boil and melt the wax nevertheless do not put the vessel containing the wax directly on the fire as this may prove to be hazardous. If you do not have enough old candles, buying new ones in bulk quantities will keep the total cost down and will definitely be cheaper than the exorbitant price charged in stores.
Although aluminum containers may get hot when you pour hot wax in them, they are the best choice. If you were to use glasses as moulds, you could get some designs on or paper cups should do as well for a simple shape.
Make the wick by taking out one from an old candle or using white cotton straw. This can be done by rubbing wax on it. The color should be added very slowly to the wax so that you can stop just as soon as the desired shade is achieved. Empty the melted wax in the mould and put the wick in the middle and make sure that it goes right down slowly.
If candles with colored layers are desired, the wax must be melted in different containers and the desired colors added to each container. A multicolored candle needs a long, tall mould so you can see the various shades. Remember to wait for each colored layer to cool before pouring in the next. You need to do this if you don't want to end up with an awful colored candle.
Fragrant candles can be made by adding fragrance oils to the hot wax after the coloring process.
The oil-based fragrances like the floral ones of jasmine and rose and the others such as tea tree, lemon grass and musk are easily available in the market. The candle will easily slide once it has hardened.
