Hence to help you with this problem here are a few very important points that you should avoid while applying for a work permit in a foreign country like the United Kingdom.

1. Don't trust the foreign companies blindly. There are many possibilities that they are cheating you. Thus to be careful, you should have a proper look at the documents and the registration of the foreign company.
2. Again, don't trust the authority of the foreign company without any proof. It is very much possible that the person communicating with you is not the right authority or is a person who is not the correct person in charge to appoint you for the job.
3. Do not resign from the present job till you find a job and a visa to the foreign country.
4. Do not start applying for jobs in The UK before you get your visa.
5. Consult a well reputed and reliable consultant for your documentations.
6. While counting the points, be careful and don't try to manipulate the numbers in the points calculator system.
7. Don't ever disclose about your income tax statements or frauds while applying for a visa.

A lot of confusion has been introduced recently regarding work permits after the recent introduction of points-based system for applying for a work permit in the United Kingdom.

For citizens from European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland the procedure is quite relaxed. But, for persons coming from other countries, especially from Asia, the procedure is quite rigoureous.

Under the new points-based system, an applicant need minimum 95 points to be eligible to be considered for awarding work permit. These 95 points would include 75 points for your attributes, 10 points for your skills in English language and another 10 points for showing that you have sufficient funds to maintain yourself in Great Britain.

A candidate could earn points for attributes in case he or she held a student visa and was studying in any undergraduate or postgraduate degree, offered by institution that are included in a list made by the authorities. In case, you are unable to claim any point regarding sufficiency of funds, then your application would be rejected. If you are applying, while staying within the UK, you will have to a show a minimum amount of GBP 800 for at least three months prior to the submission of the application. This amount would increase substantially, in case you are applying from outside the Great Britain.

Work Permit is the most common category under which people living outside EEA countries could come to UK for work. "Business and commercial" is the most common category covered by , the other category being "sports and entertainment".

The work permit application is to be made by the potential employer in the Great Britain. Only when the application is successful, then only the person concerned would get clearance to come to the United Kingdom. The employer would have to convince the UK Border Agency that skill of the applicant cannot be provided by any residential worker and the person would get proper remunerations for his or her skills.

The potential employer can also apply for a work permit in case the skill provided by the applicant is listed under shortage occupation list.
