[H1591]How To Sell Photos
by Diane Kelly, Dia
Photography jobs are few and very hard to get but you can sell your photos as stock on the internet. What that means is you take images that you think are well composed and well lit and upload them on a website that handles that type of photograph. Search for stock photography for examples. Istock for instance is just one.

Different stock houses specialize in different kinds of photos. Ask if they don't tell you what they want or just look at their stock. You have to look around for a stock house that likes what you shoot. Some do more animals and others people and industry.

All of us cannot be an Ansel Adams and definitely not when starting out. The equipment you choose can be your best friend or worst nightmare, depending on what you purchase. Get the best you can while still considering your budget. Olympus, Canon and Nikon carry high quality products that are dependable. Believe me, as a professional, you need to depend on your gear. If you are devoted to learning the photography trade it will be worth it.

A piece of gear that has proven helpful is a light meter. Not a first purchase but later when you become proficient. You might ask yourself why would I need a light meter since ALL digital cameras have one built in. Well the built ins are handy but should not be totally depended on because it if effected by the subject of the photo instead of the light falling on the subject. Lighting is a very big deal.

Look around at your favorite haunts for good on location photos. Make sure the location is easy to get to. What could be a worse than a photo job to go very badly when your bride to be has to march through a ravine to have her portrait taken. Your first commission could easily go awry.

Lessons are a good step to take so ask anyone you know that knows about photography. Community colleges offer classes and a group situation could teach you a lot. Shoot constantly with your equipment. The more intimate you are with your gear the more knowledgeable you will become. You could even get good at photography.

You may have to forfeit your copyright and that means that your image can be used as many times as the buyer needs but you get no more money. But who cares since you are enjoying your vocation.

The most important thing is to take pictures. Take your camera equipment everywhere you go. Don't ever miss a chance to shoot since you need all the experience you can get. Get up for the sunrise or stay late for sunset. Light is a huge component of a photographer's craft. Learn how to work with it. Good luck and happy shooting.
