Some able adults will despair to their piano teacher that they feel they'll never master this skill, whereas many tiny tots seem to learn independent hands with no apparent problem. Let's face it, everyone's brain works slightly differently. Some are just wired naturally for piano playing and some are not.
Don't despair though. By following the advice below anyone can benefit from their piano lessons. some will take longer than others and may feel they are getting nowhere for a while but there is always some improvement through practice.
Consider these three steps to success.
First, make sure that the piece you're attempting to play isn't too difficult. If you're trying to run before you can walk, you'll get nowhere fast! As adults, we all tend to look at first pieces in a book and think we can achieve something much harder.
Remember that when training your fingers for the piano keyboard you have to learn many new motor skills. Remember the hare and the tortoise. When you start to play piano going slow is really the best policy.
Second, make sure you are confident about playing each hand separately. So well in fact that you would not be put off playing by any minor distractions.
You should be able to play the left hand whilst singing the melody of the right hand at the same time. This is a great way to start to detach your playing from your conscious thinking. Eventually your hands will carry on playing wherever your mind may be.
Third, just take it slowly. I mean slow the tempo right down and play the piano notes regularly in tempo but slowly. You'll naturally have to play more slowly hands together than you do hands separately at first.
As soon as you start to put the hands together just cut your speed in half. Then be very precise. If you play too quickly to be accurate then you are actually learning to memorise these inaccuracies. You can always speed up when you are more proficient.
By following these simple steps, you will learn piano very quickly. For some people it will happen almost instantaneously whilst others will have to struggle, but if you persevere and keep repeating these steps the hands will eventually seem to know instinctively which piano notes to play and when.
So many people wish they could learn piano - or reach a new level - but never take the first step because they believe it's too difficult or too late in their lives. I can assure you, nothing could be further from the truth! If you've dreamed about how great it would be to play your favorite music on the piano, you're about to make your dream come true.
The internet is bursting with sites promising they can teach you to play piano - if you have the patience, the money for expensive CD courses, the ability to learn their specific method, etc. I've always believed there should be a web site devoted to giving enthusiasts all the knowledge they need to master the piano on their terms and at their pace. If you've been searching for the same thing, it's really out there. But you must do your research. There are far too many sites that just want to make a quick buck, leaving you frustrated and with no skills.
But here's the good news: even if you've never played piano, you can easily learn to play a tune the day you take your first lesson. Think about it...a piano's keyboard is nothing more than a row of buttons. If you can press a button, you can make music. All that's required is a keyboard and a desire to make music.
If you're new to the piano, the first thing you'll discover is that the reason you didn't learn piano years ago was because somebody made you believe it's a lot of hard work. That was true when I was a child and had to play those excruciating exercises and learn songs I didn't like in preparation for a recital I dreaded. Today, lessons in manuals have been replaced by simple visual cues and "tricks" that make sense to practically everyone.
For example, if I told you to go from 1 to 5, then 2 to 6, then 3 to 7, would you recognize the next logical pair? If you said 4 to 8, you understand one essential trick about playing piano!
I haven't forgotten you experienced performers. You're likely at a point in your life where you know all the basics, maybe you're in a band or other ensemble, but want to play like a pro. Have you wished you could master those fat, intricate chords and rapid fire key runs? Believe it or not, there are little-known secrets to sounding just like your favorite musician. So instead of believing you'll never be "great", start looking forward to how great you're going to be!
