The appearance of a guitar tab is quite similar to a music sheet. A guitar tab will differ from a music sheet in containing six lines, rather than the five that are present on a music sheet. The six lines over here are for the guitar strings.
Only remember that the strings are invariably arranged from the thinnest to the thickest with the thickest string invariably being the base line. An example of a guitar tab is below:
Ordinarily there will be a number on each line. The lines are marked with numbers that let you know which "fret" on the string you should be playing. For example, in case you come across a numeral "2", it would signify 2nd fret, numeral "3", third fret and so on. In case you come across the numeral "0", it signifies that the string is played "open". There will be no fingers palced on the fret board while playing a string "open". If you see the letter "X", this is saying that the string referenced should not be played.
Your left hand should be used to hold the guitar. right hand is known as picking hand You will play the notes by using this hand on the guitar. You will notice that there are bars that run across the neck. You'll generally find 22-even but some guitars may have more. As you go up the fret board closer to your body, they're placed closer proximity to each other.
On referring the guitar sheet above, you are to place your index finger of your left hand right behind the fourth fret of the most bottom string and then you have to pick the string with your right hand.
You're on your way to becoming a rock star! Now that wasn't too hard, was it?
