[H1320]How To Learn Skateboarding
by Dana Bradley, Dan

Skateboarding is an increasingly popular sport, especially with children and teenagers. While many people know how to skateboard for basic transportation and can stay on it fairly well, the popularity of trick riding is increasing. Because of this there are many schools that are cropping up that will help the novice skateboarder attain the skills needed to do the tricks and stunts they often see on television. Going to a skateboarding school for instruction is an ideal way to learn these feats in a safer environment. The student will learn all the safety aspects and the trick will be broken down so they learn proper form and balance. If this is a goal for someone, learning through a skateboarding school is a great place to start.

Often skateboarding schools are located in skate shops and skate parks. This is convenient because you can often purchase gear as well as learn the basics. The classes are generally broken up by age and ability. The younger children can learn how to skateboard without worrying about older children. The more advanced skateboarders can hone their skills without feeling like they are being held back. While skate boarding schools are not prevalent throughout the country yet, most major metropolitan cities have some type of skate board instruction readily available. Sometimes there are schools that have group lessons for an hourly or package price. Other times there is a skateboard professional that does one on one tutoring. Usually, the group classes are best for beginners and they are also less expensive. As the child continues to grow and if there is an interest in competition, an individual class or coach may be advisable at that time.

Skateboarding lessons are not inexpensive, with most starting at approximately thirty to fifty dollars per hour. However, for those who are serious about learning, this can be a great investment. Once the child has reached a level to start competing, though, it can really get expensive. Private Coaches and the gear needed can cost quite a bit of money. When looking for skateboarding schools, make sure you observe a class first. Also check the qualifications of the instructors to ensure the children are getting instruction from someone who knows what they are doing. Once you have a good feel for the class and what it entails, it is wise to stay for the first few lessons so you can discuss the progress made with your child. It is best, if possible, to pay for skateboarding lessons as you go as opposed to committing to a package that is prepaid and requires a set number of classes. If the child gets discourages he may want to stop going.
