Makeup technology then was a far cry from what is available today. Yet when many modern women wear red lipstick, they look harsh, garish or clownish instead of as sensual as they really should. Add on red blusher done too heavy handedly and they look like a bunch of clowns. What are they doing wrong.
How can you wear red makeup and look all the more gorgeous for it?
By the way, when I talk about red makeup, I mean red lipstick and blusher. Some women can even get away with coral eyeshadow and look even more stunning for it. I remember a Venetian Miss Universe who looked absolutely amazing wearing a red gown and red makeup. Even the eyeshadow was coral.
Actually, red lips are considered beautiful across cultures, throughout history. Geishas painted tiny bright red lips on their faces. Victorian beauties blushed beautifully and looked so pretty with their red lips, made redder by biting them before they meet the guys they fancy. Who can forget Snow White. Hair as black as ebony, skin as white as snow and lips as red as blood, hence her name, Snow White. The invention of red lipstick lets any woman have those classic red lips if she dares.
Should you wear fire-engine red lipstick?
There are a few tricks to note when you put on really red lips. The golden rule is to highlight either the eyes or the lips. Not both at the same time. When you wear bold red lipstick and heavy eyeliner, with dark, smoky eye makeup and false eyelashes, with a low cut minidress, you would look more slutty than attractive. The trick is to play up one feature. In this intance the lips.
If you go for a bold mouth, play down the eyes with lighter, more natural eye makeup.
Another thing to note is the shade of red you use. If you have warm skin tones, go for coral red lipstick or any orange-red lipstick. A coral or orange red blush would look wonderful on you too, provided you apply it with a very light hand. Today's sheer colors let you use colors that look very strong in the palette but appear like a transparent flush on your skin for a very flattering result.
If you have cool skin tones, go for a true red lipstick or any red lipstick with blue undertones. These are your best reds. Choose a similar shade for your blush. Cool eyeshadow colors would include lilac or silver as the main eyeshadow color with dark gray for deepening the crease. Warm eyeshadow colors that go well with red lipstick (coral or orange red for warm skin tones) include bronze, peach and dark brown.
Now go a indulge yourself in that sexy red pout.
Not sure whether you have warm coloring or cool coloring?
Feeling like you need a quick midlife lift to look like a Boomer Babe? Here are 5 simple fashion tips that can help you look Fabulous after 40, in under 10 minutes. 1.Lower your Neckline An easy way to turn back the clock a few years is to open up your neckline. Steer clear of tops and t-shirts that sit at the collarbone and opt for lower rounded necklines and v-necks. Another great option is to try a wrap top which will create the illusion of sexy. If you find that too low, just add a camisole to peek out at the V. A chunky necklace also helps to fill in the bareness and make you look fabulous after 40.
2. Forgo the Frosted Make up. It’s no help that the makeup companies just love to put frost in everything from eye shadow to blush to lipstick to bronzer. But, although it’s tempting to wear some shimmer, be forewarned…If you are over 40 you will find that frosted eye shadow really shows up all the little fine lines and creases. If you must, just dab it on right below the brow, for a nice evening shimmer, but other than that, you’d be smart to steer clear.
3. Pull Your Shirt Out
If you are over 40 and haven’t had liposuction you are sure to have a bit of a belly so just remember, chic women don’t tuck in. Tucking your shirt in will accentuate your stomach and make you look dumpy. If you worry that an untucked top will look loose and messy, then you are wearing the wrong top. Try a more fitted t-shirt that follows the curves of your body shirt no matter what your size. A loose shirt pulled out on a size 2 or 24 will only make you look square and boxy.
3. Pass on Small Prints
Conjure up an image of a little dowdy little old lady and you probably visualize a granny in a tiny flower print dress. Small prints (especially ones with little flowers) can look really matronly, especially after 40. And, if you have some meat on your bones, small prints will make you look really fat too. Got the picture??!!
3. Heave-Ho to Small Hot Rollers
Are you still using small hot rollers? Then your hair probably looks out of date! The style today is wavy and loose and is best accomplished with extra large rollers or gently wrapping sections of your air around a curling iron. A 1940’S wave reminiscent of Veronica Lake is the all the rage this fall, so be sure you loosen up those locks to look stylish after 40.
