You know Spring is approaching when you start to see tulips everywhere. Unlike other flowers, planting tulip bulbs isn't always as easy as sticking a seed in the ground and covering it up with dirt. You can plot your garden by placing your bulbs where you want them to go. Contrary to popular belief, tulips don't last forever and after 5 or 6 years, your flowers will be considered 'aged' and may need to be replaced.

Preparing a hole in the soil for planting the tulip is not as simple as it sounds; the hole must be about ten inches deep and you should leave the soil at the bottom of the hole somewhat loose to help air and water have access to get in and around the bulb in the hole. Put back two to three inches of the soil you dug in the hole, so that the soil will have a fair amount of air.

You must place the bulb in the hole the right way. First of all, you should place them at the same depth so that they will bloom at the same time. The large part of the bulb is placed in the dirt and the smaller portion is pointing upwards. Plant your bulbs according to the package - too deep and they won't grow, too shallow and animals will dig them up for food.

The best thing to do when planting is to fill the pits with compost or manure after you've placed the bulbs in the ground. Tulip bulbs only bloom successfully when they have the things they need to grow, including one of the best ideas, nitrogen. Firmly pat the dirt on top to provide a stable place for your plants to grow, but take care not to damage the tender bulbs in the process. To put the proverbial cherry on top, sprinkle mulch over the top of the bed to lock in the moisture and keep rodents out.
