Candle Candle making can become a lucrative business if you don't watch out. It generally starts out as a home hobby that becomes a passion that becomes a small business. And, as you know, small businesses grow into big businesses. The best thing about candle making is that it really doesn't take any special expensive equipment to start. You can start with small simple single wax candles in simple containers and then once you think you really get the hang of it you can experiment with different types of waxes, colors and fragrances.
Candle making is a great way to express yourself artistically. You can make candles for use in your own home, or candles as gifts for friends and neighbors. Every woman loves to receive a special candle. You could make your mother a special candle for Mother's Day or for her birthday using the colors of her birthstone, or her favorite color. Of course you'd make it her favorite scent.
Don't fret though, if you don't want to become a candle maker you can still easily find quality scented candles online with easy online searches. You may actually be amazed at the number you find. It's become very hip and chic to buy expensive scented candles. No longer does just bayberry or cinnamon or ocean mist scented candles fit the bill. Although these are still popular today as with everything there are now designer scented candles. Diptyque is one brand. They have very sophisticated and complex fragranced candles. Diptyque candles are available in scents you've never heard of such as black-currant leaves fig and firewood.
Candles come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Today one of the most popular candles are container candles, candles in clear glass jars with lids. These container candles are safer to burn than tapered or pillar candles as the flames are contained inside the jar. These candles are especially nice because you can place them on an electric candle warmer instead of lighting the wick. The electric candle warmer heats and liquefies the wax releasing the fragrance into the air.
Of course fragranced pillar candles are still popular as are tea light candles. Fragranced pillar candles make wonderful table centerpieces, as do tea light candles floating magically in water. There is a never ending variety of candle holders such as candle sticks and tealight candle holders, wrought iron candle holders and candle wall sconces. Some of these candle holders are works of art unto themselves and can beautifully illuminate a room, while allowing the candle to add a lovely fragrance.
It doesn't matter which style of candle is your favorite you'll be able to find a lovely candle holder for it. If you like pillar candles, or tea light candles you can find lovely candle holders of wrought iron, glass, plastic, wood, or metal. You can find candle wall sconces in many different styles to enhance your home. These candle wall sconces are a lovely and decorative and a safe way to be able to enjoy candles in your home.
When you start to shop for candles you will see some made of paraffin wax and some made from all natural soy wax. All natural soy wax is gathering quite a following. All natural soy is ecologically friendly as it's a completely renewable resource. Paraffin wax is a byproduct of the production of oil, not good for the environment. Also, paraffin wax does release toxins into the air when it's burned. Soy wax candles burn cleanly, they do not leave soot behind as some paraffin wax candles do.
When you shop around for candles you'll also see a wide range of prices. In most cases, you do get what you pay for. We've all purchased cheap candles and have been disappointed in the fragrance. Candles such as White Barn, Classic Candles ScentSations and Yankee Candles use high quality scenting agents. This is one big difference. These candles will also emit the fragrance as strongly at the end as it does at the beginning. This is because these candle manufacturers pride themselves on the quality of their candles.
It is important to use only the highest quality waxes and luxurious fragrances. Never use a lead core wick. Use only zinc or cotton. It's also very important to test the wicks in whatever size container you are using to see that they are properly burning. The wick should allow the candle to burn all the way out and all the way down.
As for the fragrance, make sure to include enough fragrance to ensure a strong scent throw from the candle. I would suggest about 4 to 6oz. of fragrance per 3lbs. of wax. This will make the scent potent and make the fragrance last.
Whatever type of candle you are trying to make, be sure to get the correct wax. There are different types of waxes for different types of candles. There are one pour waxes, waxes that are better for container candles, and waxes that are better for pillar type candles. Your wax supplier should be able to tell you which is best for your project.
