[H1446]How To Not Get Banned
by Chris Angus, Chr

Although Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) does fall into two distinct categories there is no ethical stance on SEO.
Don't let a search Engine Optimiser sell you that they have ethical ways of working when optimising your site. Either a technique works or is doesn't. Period.
As long as you know the risks, there is nothing wrong with “Black Hat” SEO. It is not illegal or immoral. The only downfall is that your site MAY get black listed.

People attempting to do SEO will invariably push the boundaries in trying to get their website to the top of the search engines. This article will briefly explain what to do and what not to do.

Search Engine Optimisation has two areas of functionality. White Hat SEO and Black Hat SEO.

White Hat SEO - is typically working within the search engines guidelines, by working within the Search Engines guidelines your site should be safe and won't face the chance of being banned or de-indexed by the search Engines.
This involves on-page optimisation and link building. There are many, many different types of on-page optimisation and link building that are deemed acceptable and there are many that are seem as unacceptable. The easiest way to explain what you can and can't do is by starting with what you can't do. That falls under the “Black-Hat” banner.

Black Hat SEO – is working outside the Search Engines guidelines, while there are many a grey area, I will list the definitive actions you should avoid if you don't want to put your website at risk.

Hidden or Partially hidden text – This is making your copy the same colour as your back round.

Cloaking – This is showing search engines on page in visitors another. This is a risk but effective way of boosting your ranking.

Keyword Stuffing - This involves stuffing keywords into the picture descriptions or Meta Tags.

Participating in Link Farms – This is where thousands of unrelated sites link to one another.

Google, the undisputable leader in search engines, today, is placing a high importance on the quality and relevancy of its search engines. Most especially now that the company is public property. In order to keep the shareholders and users of its engines happy, the quality of the returned results are given extreme importance.

For this same reason, doing the wrong things in the Adsense and other forms of advertisements, whether intentionally or unintentionally, will result in a severe penalty, may get you banned and even have your account terminated. Nothing like a good action taken to keep wrongdoers from doing the same things over again.

So for those who are thinking of getting a career in Adsense, do not just think of the strategies you will be using to generate more earnings. Consider some things first before you actually get involved.

a) Hidden text, filling your advertisement page with texts to small to read, has the same color as the background and using css for the sole purpose of loading them with rich keywords content and copy will earn you a penalty award that is given to those who are hiding links.

b) Page cloaking, there is a common practice of using browser or bot sniffers to serve the bots of a different page other than the page your visitors will see. Loading a page with a bot that a human user will never see is a definite no-no. This is tricking them to click on something that you want but they may not want to go to.

c) Multiple submissions, submitting multiple copies of your domain and pages is another thing to stay away from. For example, trying to submit a URL of an Adsense as two separate URL's is the same as inviting trouble and even termination. Likewise, this is a reason to avoid auto submitters for those who are receiving submissions. Better check first if your domain is submitted already an a certain search engine before you try to submit to it again. If you see it there, then move on. No point contemplating whether to try and submit there again.

d) Page rank for sale, if you have been online for quite some time, you will notice that there are some websites selling their PR links or trading them with other websites. If you are doing this, expect a ban anytime in the future. It is okay to sell ads or gain the link. But doing it on direct advertisement of your page rank is a way to get on search engines bad side.

e) Link farms, be wary of who and what are you linking your Adsense to. The search engines know that you cannot control your links in. But you can certainly control what you link to. Link farming has always been a rotten apple in the eyes of search engines, especially Google. That is reason enough to try and avoid them. Having a link higher than 100 on a single page will classify you as a link farm so try and not to make them higher than that. Also stay away from free for all links pages and web spammers or if a website has been dropped or banned by the search engines in the past.

f) Doorways, this is similar to cloaking pages. The common practice of a page loaded with choice keyword ads aimed at redirecting visitors to another ?user-friendly? page is a big issue among search engines. There are many seo firms offering this kind of services. Now that you know what they actually are, try to avoid them at all costs.

g) There should be no broken links or 404 errors, pop-ups or pop-unders on your website will be penalized for them and do not have webpages with irrelevant words or phrases.

h) There should not be webpages with minimal content that is of little or no value to the topic of the site and no duplicate content unnecessarily displayed on your websites.

i) There are software programs that submits webpages or check rankings of webpages automatically with programming queries to the all search engines, and consumes the resources of the search engines which are extremely valuable to them, you will be penalized for using this type of software.

j) The over use of a competitors logo, name or brand names, websites with to many virtual host names will also be penalized by search engines.

k) Webpages that install any type of virus, trojan or spyware is a major step to get banned. Spyware or malware that tracks web surfers actions, movements and locations on the world wide web and then reports all this information right back to unscrupulous operators who then spam the web surfers with all kinds of junk. Spyware of this type is often not knowingly downloaded by the web surfer, usually while the web surfer is playing a online game or is attached to some kind of software that they need or targeted information that the web surfer wants to download from a website. Usually, this type of software is hard to detect and remove from their personal computer and causes all kinds of problems with their computer in functionality.

l) Multiple domains having the same content. In case you are not aware of it, search engines look at domains IP's, registry dates and many others. Having multiple domains having the same exact content is not something you can hide from them. The same goes with content multiplied many times on separate pages, sub domains and forwarding multiple domains to the same content.

Getting dropped and/or banned from the major search engines can cause your rankings to have dire effects on your website traffic, sales and website popularity.

The above tactics apply to most search engines and is not entirely for Google only. Avoid the wrath of the search engines getting website banned, your Adsense and website account closed.
