[H1171]How To Get Muscle Definition
by Dane Fletcher, Dan

When most bodybuilders first enter a gym, their goal isn't to become ripped. They don't care about proportions. They could care less about etching definition and striations into muscle groups. Their goal is typically to get BIG. Once they achieve this goal, and compete in a bodybuilding show or two, they begin to realize that while pure unadulterated size is fun to have, it's the well-built bodybuilders with etched in striations and detail that win bodybuilding shows.

When the goal inevitably changes from adding pure size to adding definition and detail, a new set of rules and practices must come into play. Here are a few changes to the "get big!" strategy, which refines it to "get bigger AND better".

Higher rep ranges

Employing a rep range of 12 to 20 allows the muscle group to recruit slow-twitch fibers which are typically neglected during the standard bodybuilding rep scheme of 8 to 12 reps. This also flushes an additional amount of blood into the region which provides the region with new levels of amino acids being present during the post-workout anabolic window healing period.

Train for pump

When trying to build new mass, many bodybuilders attempt to constantly train to failure. This is a good approach, as it figuratively destroys the tendons, muscle, and supporting muscle infrastructure and inspires new growth. However, when attempting to etch detail into a muscle group, the goal should change form muscle group annihilation to muscle group stimulation. Train for a pump - the maximum amount of blood in a muscle group that it can hold.

Visualization

The mental aspect of bodybuilding is often ignored in this sport of counting calories, reps, sets, and pounds. However, mentally focusing upon the muscle being trained, and adjusting exercise movement and flexing motions to meet this focus, allows a bodybuilder to maximize the rewards reaped from each repetition. Visualize the muscle being engorged with blood, and the subconscious actions of your body during the exercise movement will make it a reality.

Definition-sometimes referred to as ripped-is looking at someone's arm and seeing their muscle laying against their skin. This goal is shared by bodybuilders and most fitness enthusiasts, alike. Definition is actually what makes muscles appear larger. Someone who works out and has a 12 inch bicep, that bicep will actually look larger than someone with an undefined 15 inch bicep.

So what does "being ripped" mean? Definition consists of two things; muscle size and body fat percentage. To become defined you need to lose fat while building muscle. This is what most everyone wants to achieve by working out.

Wow! I can hear you saying "Caleb sure knows his stuff. He can surely tell me what exercises I can do to get ripped." While I am flattered and humbled, I have to say this is the one thing I can not do for you. Why? There is no such exercise.

To get that "ripped" look, you have to lose excess fat while building muscle, simple as that. Now one thing I see a lot of which does sort of bother me is people who get into bodybuilding while neglecting to work out in other ways. Not only is this not the best thing for general health, these are the same people who will often drop out of bodybuilding because they failed to get that defined look they were aiming for.

To get an all around fitness workout, I recommend low impact, low intensity cardio exercise. This can be done by biking or hiking. Much has been said lately about the damage running can do to the knees so I don't recommend running. Especially for weightlifters.

As for building muscle mass, as always, I advise low numbers of reps with heavier weights to build muscle fast. You want to be using enough weight that you cannot do more than your planned number of reps per set. This combined with low impact cardio and a healthy diet will get you to that "ripped" look we're all looking for.

Bye for now; see you at the gym.
