If your bonsai is made from a tropical tree and you happen to live in a cold area, you really need to give very special care to that plant.

If you want an easier life, you may just choose trees that will go well with the conditions in your area. Despite their size, bonsai trees also need to adapt to any changes in environment. In case your bonsai originates from a special species, you should make sure you understand its specific caring requirements before you pick it up.

* Water Your Bonsai Properly

Bonsai plants do not have to be watered everyday but there are instances when they have to be. Watering frequency usually depends on the kind of tree, type of soil and the season. You may have to devise a watering plan specifically for your bonsai.

It is a general rule that you should neither over-water nor under-water your bonsai plants. Use your fingers and nails to give the soil a feel. If the soil is moist, the water is sufficient; but if the soil is dry, you will need to water your plant right away.

In some cases, bonsai owners water once a day in hot days and once every two days or so in cold days. This is not a hard and fast rule though. Your plant may have different water needs.

* Grow Outside

Bonsai does look more like an art than a plant, and some people tend to keep them indoor for appreciation. But, in reality, bonsai plants will only stay healthy with sufficient sunlight and therefore should always be grown outdoor. One exception to this rule is where you have a tropical bonsai but live in a cold area, in which case special indoor protection should be devised for your plant.

If you bonsai plant is native to your place, there is no reason why it should not do well outside even in winters. You will only need to give it some protection when the weather turns extremely harsh.
