[H882]How To Build A Garage
by B. Harold, B.
You may want to consider building a garage if you are looking to do some thing to truly express yourself. To see what is possible, lets take a look at a couple examples. Take a look and see if anything my friends did inspires you, as both of these examples come from friends of mine that have redone their garages.

Two Examples Of How To Build A Garage That Is Fun

One of my friends is a huge fan of the Grateful Dead and decided to build a garage to store his van in the winter and hang out in. The cost to build a garage like this was a factor, but he was pretty open to spending some money. He then went about building a detached garage.

He made sure to purchase an extra sturdy and insolated garage door to make sure that the garage would be comfortable in the winter. He took his extensive collection of cloth banners that he had collected and hung them throughout the garage. I would estimate he had approximately twenty of them and they took up most of the walls and ceiling. He parked his van that he used for summer tours back in the day on one side of th e garage.

All though every once in a while he still takes it for a spin or the occasional show, most of the time it just sat there. On the other side he set up comfortable couches and throw rugs. A massive steal your face was painted on the floor. The walls underneath the hung banners were painted tie dye. All of this created a really unique area and since it was the garage it was not something that he needed to show people. In addition, it could easily and quickly be converted to a normal garage with a couple gallons of paint and some time.

The next friend I have was a huge Dale Earnhardt fan and when he died he built a garage that is somewhat of a shrine. The first thing he did was paint a large red, black and white 3 on a black background on the garage floor. After that was done he went about collecting as much Dale Earnhardt memorabilia as he could collect. He filled the garage over time with as much as he could.

On the one side he has a mechanics shop set up complete with a full hydraulic lift capable of picking up a loaded cargo van and on the one side he parks his vehicles. He also has an extensive collection of tools here as well including air compressors and pretty much everything needed to do a full tear down and rebuild. To fund this project and to help offset the cost of all the tools, he has done work on the side in the garage. His idea on how to build a garage is truly inspirational.

As you can see there are two very different approaches on how to build a garage into something that is unique and your own. Hopefully this helped to give you some ideas on what you can do.

The first step in any project of this scope is to understand is that you need to know how to build a garage. Concrete work, cement blocks, carpentry, electrical work and plumbing, combined with a lot of hard work is going to be involved. Any part of the construction you are not familiar with is best left to professionals.

The next step would be contact your local or county building commission to obtain the proper permits for construction. You will need plans and a site layout for them to approve, insuring it is not built too close to the property line and meets all other parts of the local building code. Hiring a contractor that knows how to build a garage also knows whom to contact as well as the local construction rules.

Measure and level the ground on which your garage will sit. The bottom should be at least eight inches below the planned finished level to allow for gravel to be placed before concrete is poured for the floor. The footer is the next project and should be dug deep enough to be below the frost line in your climate. If you how to build a garage you can either lay three or four layers of cement blocks on top of the footer, or use what is termed a floating slab for the floor, meaning that after the footer is in place, the concrete is poured and allowed to become part of the side wall.

Attaching Side Walls, Allow For Doors And Windows

Sidewalls can be attached to the top plate, attached to the concrete blocks of the wall, or directly to the floor if using a floating slab, once a thin vapor barrier has been placed between the floor and the wood. Learning how to build a garage also requires knowledge of reading the plans. Leaving the appropriate space for doors or windows and where to allow space to run electrical and possibly plumbing lines is al needed.
