[H1044]How To Drink Water
by Mariam Ma, Mar
When people get out of the city to go camping and enjoy nature, they don't expect to run into pollution problems. After all it's nature, right? Everything is supposed to be pristine. Well, don't let mother nature fool you. The crystal clear water you see from lakes and rivers might not be as pure as you might think.

Untreated water from the great outdoors might contain bacteria, parasites and viruses that can become harmful once ingested. Symptoms can include nausea, diarrhea and vomiting. That's why it's important to be educated on the water purification process when going camping.

There are three basic methods of purifying water when camping. They are the filter process, the chemical process and the boil method.

The boil method is the best bet to kill all bacteria, micro-organisms and viruses dead. However, it is also a time consuming process to bring large quantities of water to a boil. After that, you need to let the water cool down unless you wish to drink hot water on a hot day. Boiling water also requires a fire or some other source of heat source. In any case, while boiling water is effective, it isn't the most convenient option.

An alternative option to the boil method is to use a water filter. Filters are a mechanical method to separate parasites and other undesirables from the water. Look to buy a water filter of 1 micron or less to strain out protozoa like giardia and cryptosporidium. A more refined filter of less than 0.4 micron will remove most bacteria. Or, a water filter system with a built-in iodine component will kill the bacteria and viruses. This leads to the third method of water purification: the chemical method.

Iodine is often used in chemical water purification tablets to kill bacteria and viruses. Tablets are cheap and easy to use but they have some drawbacks as well. The shelf life of tablets is about six months in an open bottle and the iodine also leaves a taste in the water. To combat this problem, carbon filters are used to remove the iodine.

As you can see, the most effective method for fast drinking water is through a combination of mechanical water filters with a chemical component of iodine. With this in mind, make sure you are equipped with a good water purification system the next time you go camping so you can really enjoy the outdoors.

The bottled water companies are cleaning water that is more or less already clean. Thus, consumers are presently paying for tap water packaged in wasteful plastic bottles that they could clearly get in their own homes for nothing. Consumers can do their best to ensure that they do not destroy the environment with the never ending supply of plastic bottles that are being purchased every year, simply by purchasing a water filter system for their home or kitchen.

Why in that case, do so many Americans prefer the expense of bottled water above the completely safe tap water existing in their own homes?

It would be an understatement to assert that water is a trouble-free and indispensable resource we all need to continue to exist. In the United States, clean, healthy water is on hand almost everywhere. And yet, the bottled water industry has grown-up tremendously in the previous thirty years and has been forecasted to grow even further next year.

Bottled water has turn into an indispensable fixture in American lives and culture. Thirty years in the past, there was really no bottled water industry to tell of since most Americans saw no need to obtain their water from anywhere but their own kitchen sink.

However, this year, Americans spent $15 billion on bottled water provided by brands such as, Evian, Aquafina, and Dasani.

Fifteen billion dollars is more than Americans pay out on iPods or film tickets, so the marketplace for bottled water is overweight and appears to simply be getting bigger. A generation of youthful Americans have been raised to drink just bottled water when not too far back their parents relied mainly on tap water.

Admittedly, bottled water is handy and Americans are avid consumers of products that add to the convenience of their day to day lives. However, there is an increasing analysis that bottled water is an needless luxury that is quickly becoming an environmental concern.

Bottled water sales are growing at around 10 percent per year.

In time, however, this growth leads to an increased amount of bottles in landfills. Even the New York Times has united with the criticism by stating that America has several of the finest water supplies in the world and that extra attention needs to be paid to the harm that so many plastic bottles cause on the environment.

But, is there one brand actually safer or healthier than tap water?

Honestly, the answer is no; bottled water is not safer or healthier than tap water, at least in the United States. Public water sources in this country are thoroughly monitored and results are made accessible to the public about water quality in their area.

Simply put, people have been convinced that bottled water is by some means healthier while in reality there are no results to indicate that such a allegation is true, most are merely tap water. With that being said, families across the United States could otherwise save themselves over $1000 a year, just by installing a quality water filter system in their home, take that bottled water bamboozelers.
