[H1045]How To Dryer Vent
by Dayne, Day
Maintaining your dryer and dryer vent system is of utmost importance to prevent dryer fires. The US Fire Administration lists clothing dryer fires as the cause of over 15,000 fires annually. Such fires cause structural damage, injuries, and around 15 deaths per year. “Failure to clean” is the leading contributor to clothes dryer fires. Proper dryer and dryer vent maintenance ensures your household will not fall victim to fires resulting from “failure to clean”.
Some useful tips for properly maintaining dryer and dryer vent systems follow.
·        Clean lint traps before and after each use
·        Wash lint screens monthly with soap and water to prevent residue buildup
·        Refrain from drying fabrics covered in combustible substances
·        Store flammable items far away from your dryer
·        Have your dryer professionally inspected and cleaned annually
·        Make sure the dryer vent system is up to code according to city, state, and manufacturer criteria
·        Use only semi-rigid or solid metal material for venting systems
·        Frequently check outside vent cover for signs of blockage, freezing, or damage
·        Be sure to have dryer vents cleaned seasonally

An old style dryer duct system or one that is improperly installed can also create a problem. The old fashioned flexible foil pipes are no longer deemed safe for use of dryer exhaust venting. One problem with this type is that it is often crushed behind the dryer, blocking the heat and moisture from escaping. Also, this type is often installed as-is, without cutting it down to size. The excess hose is left coiled up on the floor behind the dryer. The longer length and the twists and turns make your dryer work harder to expel the hot air.
The plastic or vinyl type of system creates the same problems as the flexible foil. In addition, it deteriorates and becomes brittle and cracks. Now, the air that should be vented outdoors is leaking into your home. Moisture builds up in the line and mold and mildew grow here too. If you have a gas dryer you can be concerned about carbon monoxide as well.
A proper dryer vent will be made of solid metal pipe and it will be as short and straight as possible. The inside should be smooth; pieces should be joined with metal tape, not screws that protrude to the inside to catch lint.
When the dryer is venting properly, it is working more efficiently. If you notice your dryer taking more than one cycle to dry a load of laundry then it is likely that lint has built up in the dryer ducts.
A professional dryer vent cleaning and repair service can inspect your system to be sure it meets today's safety standards. Your clothes dryer is one of the most expensive to operate when it is not properly maintained; it is also one of the least expensive to keep maintained. The service fee paid for dryer vent cleaning quickly pays for itself in money saved on energy usage.
