[H1018]How To Develop Business Plan
by Jo Han Mok, Jo
A well-executed plan that is revised on a regular basis can increase profits, cut costs and reduce the amount of time a business owner needs to spend working for the business, like just another employee.

While many small business owners use a business plan to obtain funding, leases and lines of credit from suppliers, they seldom take the time to revise and update the plans on a regular basis. They're missing out on one of the most powerful methods of improving their business's performance. A plan that is treated like a valuable asset or key employee will reap benefits and rewards that are many times the value of the time and effort it takes to keep it current.

One of the best uses of a revised business plan is charting the future growth of the business. By setting goals and time limits for reaching those goals, everyone in the business knows what the plan of action will be and can contribute towards reaching and exceeding them before the deadline set by the plan.

A continuously updated business plan can also alert a company to threats and weaknesses that could harm the business. Detecting a downward trend in sales, or a spike in customer service complaints may not require a review of a master plan.

A repeating pattern of missed goals and underperformance that isn't glaring, but is apparent from examining past revisions of the business plan may reveal a need to change business practices, retrain personnel or hire more managers.

Most importantly, a business plan that includes the participation of everyone from employees to customers can create a "brand awareness" that boosts a company's effectiveness in the marketplace. If customers become an important source of "viral" advertising because they feel a connection with the company, that becomes an asset that cannot be bought at any price.

Employees who feel as responsible for the company's image and reputation as the owner will actively find ways to protect and promote the company beyond their job description.

For those businesses that don't bother with this "extra effort" on a regular basis, the very real threat of competition and changes in the marketplace will make them vulnerable to loss of market share, increased costs in doing business and outright failure.

Being short-sighted and unable to see the road ahead means that when a sudden turn appears, it's likely that the unprepared business will take a turn for the worse. A poorly planned business is also less likely to inspire loyalty and retain good employees. The reason "good help is hard to find" is because well-planned companies are few and far between.

Even a small business, run by one person, can benefit greatly from a regular review of the business plan that started the business. Having a clear vision of what to do and when to do it can reduce stress, improve performance and reduce the time it takes to complete the tasks that the business requires to remain healthy and profitable.

Knowing in advance where you, the owner, want to be in six months or a year means you can recognize and exploit "lucky breaks', because you know them when you see them. The unprepared business owner, who lacks a clear plan for the future, may miss out on that same break because it took too long to figure out how it might fit in to a better future.

You probably haven't created a business plan. Business plans can be long and complex and seem like more of a hassle then they are worth. If you have started or are starting an internet based business then you know the challenges of getting organized and staying motivated. I am going to show you how to create a business plan in 60 seconds that will push you to meet your goals and make lots of money online.

Get Ready..

Pull out a blank piece of paper. In order to create a business plan you need to have some idea what you are going to be doing online. At the top of a blank piece of paper write what you envision the business to look like. Are you marketing a product, creating a web site, assembling widgets for another business etc.. This can be very brief, just a couple of sentences. If you haven't got a business idea then put at the top of the page: "My Plan For Finding An Online Business That Will Work For Me."

At the bottom of the page write what your ultimate goals are. Do you want to make $10,000 a month? Do you want to buy a boat, put your son through college, quit your job? Write the things that are inspiring you to make a change in your life. This is the prize at the end of all the work. You want to keep these things in mind as you are working each day.

Get Set..

Pull out an egg timer, watch, clock, hourglass or anything that buzzes. Set it for 60 seconds. When you want to complete a task this is a great trick. It gets you motivated and ignites your competitive spirit. I learned this from my children. When I wanted them to complete a task I would pull out a timer and have them race to the finish. It is a lot of fun.

Go!

Now you have 60 seconds to make a list of tasks that you need to complete in order for your business to be successful and for you to meet your personal goals. Don't think too much when writing the list. Just write until the timer goes off. At the end of 60 seconds your page should be full of tasks to be completed.

Now.. Get Ready.. Get Set.. Go!

How Did You Do?

You should have a full page of things that you need to get done. If you did it then give yourself a pat on the back and take a victory lap around your desk. You have taken the first step to motivating yourself and pushing your business to success.

Now beside each task write the period of time you are committed to completing the task within. For example, one day, one week, one month. Be realistic but challenge yourself to get the list done quickly. Each day refer back to your 60 second business plan. You should post it in your work space, on your bathroom mirror, or the dashboard of your car. Put it somewhere that you will see it and have to address it every day. Don't let a day pass without working toward one of the goals on your business plan.

It is easy to become distracted. With a 60 second plan to remind you of your goals and the steps you need to take, you should be able to propel yourself to success 60 seconds at a time.
