[H1063]How To Feel Better When Sick
by George Ruan, Geo
The body-mind-emotion connection is not only scientifically known but also quite apparent when you try out some simple steps. When your body feels uneasy, your mind can improve it. The influence of positive thought in healing is clearly evidenced from many sources. Norman Cousin, in his memoir ?Anatomy of an Illness? describes relief from a very painful spine condition in watching comedies. He claims that watching 10 minutes of funny videos allowed him two hours of pain free sleep.

Are you ready to learn some simple steps?

1. Become your own best friend. Always, always be on your side, no matter what. Be quick to forgive mistakes and ready with a kind word to yourself. Imagine that you are talking to a vulnerable small child. If your habit is to scold yourself, berate yourself, judge yourself or otherwise put yourself down, watch for these tendencies and replace them with positive, uplifting, and encouraging words.

2. Don't look down. Tightrope walkers and mountain climbers subscribe to this motto because they know that the body has a tendency to follow the eyes. In a literal sense, avoid looking down. If you find yourself depressed, raise your head and lift your eyes. Your stomach relaxes, your diaphragm unclench, you take deeper breaths, and your thoughts also follow an upward direction.

3. Practice gratitude. We often focus on what we don't have or what is wrong. Each expression of how bad it is, how we lack this and that, increases these burdens. Each negative thought adds to the weight until it is so heavy that we cannot bear it. Make a list in your daily journal of all the things for which you are grateful.

4. Smile. Even if you don't feel like smiling, smile anyway. Smile when you talk on the phone or type on the computer. Smiling filters different thoughts into your mind. If you smile long enough, you'll find yourself smiling at yourself smiling!

5. Laugh. Read, watch, or listen to something funny at least once a day. Seek others with whom to share humor. The online community is a great source for funny jokes, audio, video clips and the like. Sites like http://www.hopecube.com makes it easy to find friends who are also seeking ways to feel better.

6. Share. Take steps 1-5, bundle them all up, and share them. Write them in a daily journal. As negative focus increases the weight of the burden, positive expression relieves it. Tell a joke to someone. Give an encouraging word. Share something for which you are grateful. Give or receive some helpful advice. Find others to share with at http://www.hopecube.com. Your example inspires others and rewards you all over again!

Do something NOW to make contact with friends. There is power in action!

Tired of looking and feeling tired. Give yourself a break, and ease into feeling more in tune with life. Help is here...

Sometimes trying to stay ahead in the world today is like competing in a 10K with a bum leg. Often what gets left behind is time to take care of ourselves. You may consider yourself lucky if you have time to get a manicure every other month, or go to the gym once a week. Sadly, what should be our first priority has become our last. If you want to be younger you simply must change your daily to-do list. And then make sure you actually do what is on the list. Here are five examples of what might be on the daily list of the individual who has made herself a priority:

1. Meditate. This does not have to be some esoteric, new age practice. A good time to do this is right when you are waking up in the morning, and right before you go to sleep at night. When you are first starting your day, your mind may be racing about all the things you need to get accomplished in the day. Let your thoughts be there for now. Prop up your pillow so that you are sitting upright. Get comfortable, and start to feed your mind new thoughts. Here are some examples: “I am a sexy, beautiful woman.” “I have never been so full of energy.” “This is the most productive period of my life.” “I am a creative Genius.”

2. Laugh. Find ways to move yourself to laughter. Go to your video store with a list of movies from your childhood that got in a happy state. Maybe it was a certain actor, or a stand-up comic that did it for you. No one is judging you, whether its adolescent humor or a little raunchy—enjoy! Spend time with people that have a sense of humor about life. If your social life is lacking, communicate in forums online. There are a lot of funny people out there—find them, and soon you will begin to emulate them.

3. Get a Hobby. Your schedule might be tight, but this is important. Whether you like to write short stories or paint, find ways to be creative. Even if you are doodling with crayons on construction paper, you will be opening up that divine energy that flowed so naturally when you were a little kid.

4. Exercise. This should not be a chore. Choose something that you love to do. Some examples are: tennis, jogging, bike riding, yoga or walking. Make it accessible so that you will be less likely to think of excuses not to do it. Start out with something simple. Walk around the block, nice and easy. This is a great way for you to clear your head, and get in touch with nature. If you start with ten minutes a day, most likely, you will gravitate toward longer walks. Your body and mind will be sending you messages to get out there—listen to these messages!

5. Eat Vegetables. Sorry to sound like a Mother Hen, but the saying, “You are what you eat.” wasn’t created in a vacuum. Vegetables are creations of nature. They are wonderful because they effortlessly allow creative energy to flow through them. They are a precious gift that the Universe has supplied to us in abundance. Accept this gift by consuming this rich source of natural growth. Nutrition is important, not only for optimum energy, but for a younger appearance. Start with a vegetable you know you like. Let’s say it’s asparagus. How you cook it is less important than that you get in the habit of eating it. Cook it with some Smart Balance, a little salt and pepper, and enjoy. And wash it down with a big glass of water. If it’s difficult for you to get to the market, start with frozen vegetables. At least it's a step in the right direction. The important thing is be conscious of what you are eating. If you need more support, join a forum, and ask for help. People love to help, and you will be applauded for your sincere efforts.

Creating healthy habits is easier than you think. As in most things in life the habits we get caught up in doing are choices. We do not need to be led or controlled by a self-destructive way of life. Being young the rest of your life is a healthy choice. Embrace your new habits, and enjoy the journey.
