Anxiety disorder treatment can be a good step towards healing for someone suffering from an anxiety disorder of any type. Generally there are two types of treatments: medications and cognitive behavioral therapy. Either therapy or medications can be used by itself or in combination to successfully treat anxiety problems.
The Right Anxiety Disorder Treatment
Medications can be a very good option for those suffering from anxiety. Research has shown that many antidepressant medications can and have been used successfully. Once you and your doctor decide on a specific medication, keep in mind that it can take a while for the medications to begin to help. Any type of anti-anxiety medication can take up to a few weeks to assist your body in regulating the chemicals that cause anxiety. Some medications can have side effects, so make sure you understand both the benefits and side effects of any particular medication. Some side effects are worse than others, but if you are aware of the side effects, you will know what to expect.
Another way to treat it is therapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy is often used to help patients suffering from anxiety. One aspect of this involves changing the way the patient thinks or perceives certain things. By changing the way you think about certain situations, those particular situations can become less intimidating and help with the tendency to inflate a situation to an unmanageable level. Also, the patient can attempt to change their reactions to certain situations. This way is usually used for those who suffer from certain phobias. By exposing themselves to the specific things that trigger their anxiety, they will hopefully realize that the consequences for these situations are not nearly as bad as they thought.
Quite often, medications and behavioral therapy are used in combination for anxiety disorder treatment. When the patient changes the way they view and think about certain things, the behavioral therapy is successful. If medication is prescribed, it can take several weeks to fully work. Medications as an anxiety disorder treatment help regulate certain chemicals that the body needs. By combining the two treatments, the patient can effectively battle their anxiety disorders.
Anxiety disorder treatment is quite often successful. If behavioral therapy is prescribed, it also can take a while to work, since it takes time to change thought and behavior patterns. However, by combining these ways of curing it, most patients have had a very good level of success.
There are various kinds anxiety disorder treatments that can be used. The most common kind of treatment is prescribed medication. But there are other more natural options that one can use instead. However a doctor will often prescribe medication and will then require their patient to undergo some form of therapy as well.
Generally a person will have undergo cognitive behavioural therapy or psychodynamic therapy along with the use of medication to treat their anxiety disorder. Yet as we have previously mentioned there are natural treatments for dealing with these conditions as well, but must only be used after agreement has been made with the patients doctor. A number of people who have chosen to use natural treatments rather than prescribed ones have found that they are far more effective when used in conjunction with some kind of therapy including massage.
Yet all doctors today when treating any kind of anxiety disorder are going to first prescribe some form of medication. This will help to bring the condition under control much more quickly and once the patients anxiety has become stabilized they can start to explore other ways of treating the problem. The first type of medication that a doctor will prescribe for a patient is anti-depressants such as Paxil or Zoloft. Also the doctor may prescribe some type of mild tranquilizer as this can help to get the person in a more relaxed frame of mind. This can be extremely helpful to those patients when one of their anxiety attacks actually happens.
Normally a person will be required to take the medication for a period of time to ensure that they are getting the right dosage. Only after the doctor feels that the patient is settled can they then decide that a course of therapy is required. The first type of therapy that will be used on such people is known as behavioural therapy. During the sessions with a qualified therapist the patient will learn various techniques that can help them to bring their anxiety under control and in some cases actually prevent the attack from occurring altogether. But this form of therapy is only really effective if the patient is willing to follow the techniques correctly.
Along with behavioural therapy, a doctor may choose to get their patients disorder treated using cognitive behavioural therapy instead. This is a form of therapy that goes into more depth and helps the person to recognise those situations or patterns, which is causing them to suffer from anxiety attacks. As well as recognizing the triggers, a person will learn ways in which they can change the situation in order to prevent an attack from taking place. So what they are in fact doing is learning of different ways they should be reacting in a particular situation.
Where as psychodynamic therapy is a form of treatment that will be used to help to find out if there may be some other underlying cause for the person's problems. It is only one these causes are found can then they be resolved and which will in turn to help alleviate the problems associated with their anxiety.
As we have mentioned previously there are plenty of natural remedies that can be used in treating any kind of anxiety disorders. But these are still not considered by many doctors to be a mainstream way of treating such disorders. Certainly extracts of passion flower and Valerian root along with Kava Kava have proved to be effective for some people, but often they have again used them in conjuction with other some form of therapy. Many people are turning to using natural remedies simply because they find that there is much less chance of them suffering from side effects when taking them plus they often pretty easy to get hold of. However, if you are considering using extract of passion flower you should be aware that it does cause some health problems for some people. Some people notice after taking this particular extract they feel nauseous and in some they find that their heart rate becomes faster.
If a person who suffers from any form of anxiety disorder is not able to control the condition will find that it can have an adverse effect on their life. Yet by using one or a combination of the different kinds of anxiety disorder treatments now available they are likely to find themselves leading as normal a life as possible. Yet if they are thinking about using any kind of natural remedies as part of their treatment then they should discuss the matter with their doctor or therapist before hand.
