I know exercise should be as routine as eating and sleeping; but considering I skip breakfast and my husband has insomnia, exercise is just as routine for us.
I always plan to exercise; but before I can, I come up with another plan. Exercise plans, however, don't change. They have three components - strength, endurance and flexibility.
Of course, if physical exercise isn't your thing, you can get strength from character, endurance from a long marriage and flexibility from compromise.
If you're not good at compromise, you need to vacuum more. I discovered vacuuming under and in back of furniture builds flexibility. The more guests you have, the more flexible you become.
Exercise also increases circulation, which is good for everything from your skin to your brain. In fact, there's scientific proof exercising helps older peoples' memories. Unfortunately, you'll have to take my word for it because I can't remember what the proof is.
However, I do remember reading you can get enough aerobic exercise by doing four sets of thirty-second jumping jacks, with four-minute rests in between. Now I do that while I'm walking the dog. I'm not sure it's doing me any good, but I inspire passersby to exercise their facial muscles by smiling.
On rainy days I get my aerobic exercise at the gym; but whether I'm on a treadmill, bike or step machine, I'm bored a few minutes into my thirty-minute workout. Then I start praying for a power failure or wishing the people who make the fast-ticking timers for parking meters also made the timers for exercise machines.
Exercise machines are everywhere. The bad news is exercise machines are everywhere. Hotels have them - although having exercise machines in a Comfort Inn or Holiday Inn is an oxymoron.
Nevertheless, when I get on the scale after a vacation, I can't weight to exercise; but how much is enough?
Some experts advise sixty minutes three times a week. Others suggest you should exercise for forty minutes after you start to sweat. Still others say a daily, twenty-minute walk is enough. I say you haven't exercised enough until you can look at yourself naked in a mirror.
How many times have you heard the promise of a quick and easy path to weight loss? Chances are, if you bought into it, you were soon disappointed. The sad truth is that losing weight is neither fast nor easy. You can follow the details of your diet down to every small detail - and still find that the weight is lose to come off. Is it your fault? Not necessarily. Part of it is probably just your body's natural actions and reactions. When the body feels it is being starved (as happens when you go on a diet), it reacts by slowing your metabolism in order to protect the fat supplies it has stored for the future.
However, there is hope. Armed with a little information and a lot of willpower, there are things you can do that will once again jumpstart your weight loss plan and start burning calories in an effective, efficient way. Here, then, is the best path to burning more calories at a quicker pace.
Become a tea drinker--specifically green tea. If you'll drink three glasses of it a day, you'll find that it will work to keep your metabolism high so that you can keep burning more calories. It does this because of all the caffeine it contains as well as other natural chemicals that also assist your metabolism.
Make sure your exercise routine never becomes--well, routine. Change things up on a regular basis. This means change the time of day you exercise and do different types of exercises. Here's why. When you stay stuck in the same patterns all the time, your body becomes accustomed to it and will develop defense mechanisms that will prevent weight loss. When you change things up regularly, it doesn't have time to adapt, and weight loss happens at a faster and higher rate.
Without adding any more time to your workout schedule, add to its intensity. Throw a couple more weights on the barbell or add more resistance to whatever exercises you're doing. If you're creative, there are any number of ways to make your workout more intense without lengthening the time.
Develop some "nervous habits". Really! Start tapping your fingers or your legs; click your fingers. Every little movement adds to the number of calories you burn.
Avoid the temptation to starve yourself. It will only make you sick, and your body reacts by slowing your metabolism and consuming muscle tissue. A better option: Eat low-fat, nutritious foods instead.
Remember that water is your friends. Fluids are at least as important as solid foods on your diet. Health professionals recommend that you drink several glasses of water a day, or about five bottles. Increasing the amount of water you consume actually accelerates your metabolic rate, which helps you to burn calories faster.
Get out and enjoy the sun! Some people get caught in the rut of staying in the gym. Instead, spend some time walking or running outside in the fresh air. Research shows that people stick with their exercise program longer when a significant portion of it is done outside.
So now, armed with these suggestions for how to burn more calories at a faster pace, it's up to you what you do with this information. If you'll put it to use, in no time at all, you'll be the more fit person that you desire to be.
