[H839]How To Ask For Money As A Wedding Gift
by Gigi Mill, Gig

Traditionally the newly wedded couple received wedding gifts with the idea to help them out in setting up a household, but in these times with the people marrying rather late in life and most of them well settled in their households in variety of settings are not in desperate need of another blender or toaster.

Like everything else the gift giving style has changed for weddings. First it was the wedding registries where the couple registered for the items that they thought they needed to start in married life which was considered pretty tacky in some circles but people got over it and now it has become almost a norm. In fact, whoever does not register with some sort of wedding service is considered strange. The wedding registries like everything else evolved from modest to outrageous depending on ones social status and financial position.

Then came the celebrity and rich or ultra rich “charity donation” concept, since these people could afford most things in life and then some more, they did not need to set up a humdrum household.

Finally now is the time of “money” wedding gifts, although it has been around for centuries for instance bride or grooms parents or rich relatives helping out with money gifts on the wedding day. In many countries it is a tradition to give “money” to the groom and bride on their wedding, for example in South East Asian cultures.

What is considered “Tacky” is the actual statement that the couple would like to have a monetary gift. There are many ways to get creatively around this sticky subject. The bride and grooms friends can drop a hint something like “ you know they are saving for a down payment on a car or a house etc”.

There are many places that the guests can register for monetary wedding gifts rather than the traditional gifts. There are certain banks that have wedding registries for the couple where a money gift can be made towards a down payment on a house.

It is only a matter of time when the “money” gifts will not be a controversial subject and will be widely accepted in western culture.

Go ahead and don't be afraid to find a creative way to ask for a money gift on your wedding.

The above amount is estimated to be about 10 to 15 percent of the total wedding budget. As a result, you may want to save money on wedding photography so that the money saved can be used in other items such as your honeymoon. In fact, there are some ways to cut the cost for wedding photography without jeopardizing the notion of capturing the memorable moments in your wedding.

Let your friends and relatives take wedding photos for you

If you have relatives or friends whose hobby is taking photos, you can ask for their help to take the wedding photos for you. As I always say, they should be more than happy to help you because it is your wedding.

Usually I will advise couples to hire two photographers as a safty measure. And in the case that you ask your friends and relatives to take the wedding photos, you should also try to ask for at least two people to help. With two or more cameras, you can get your wedding photos even if one of them is broken during your wedding. This idea also applies if you will take videos in your wedding.

Let the photographers use digital camera

No matter you are asking your relatives and friends or hiring wedding photographers, it can be a good idea to use digital cameras instead of using traditional cameras that using films.

By using a digital camera, you do not need to develop the film and this already save you a portion of the budget. There will also be less waste because the photographers can preview the photos before printing, less waste here means a cut in budget.

Besides, you can request a photo CD or DVD which stores all your wedding photos in digital format. This has two advantages. First you can have one more media to store your photos instead of getting the prints only. And second you can use your computer to preview the photos first and decide which photos will be printed. This will certainly help to save some money on printing the photos.

Let your guests take the snapshots

You can put some disposal cameras on the reception table so that your guests can take them to take snapshots. Of course the technique of your guests to take photos may not be as good as your wedding photographer. However, on one hand it save you money because by doing this you do not need to hire a photographer for taking snapshots and on the other hand the photos will have special meaning because they are taken by your guests. The quality of the photos, in terms of the special meaning and memory, can never be achieved by a wedding photographer.
