[H963]How To Clean Upholstery
by Vincent Platania, Vin
How often do you clean your house? Once a week? How often do you clean your upholstery? Keeping upholstery clean is often an after-thought and usually only occurs once a year during spring cleaning. However, clean upholstery is essential to a clean house. Dirt, dust, and pet hair can imbed itself into the fabric. This can worsen allergies and degrade the air quality in your home or apartment. Here are some tips on HOW TO CLEAN UPHOLSTERY.
First, assess what needs to be done. What materials are you dealing with? Standard couch and armchair material? Leather? Canvas? Certain materials may require special methods. For example, some CANVAS CLEANING TIPS include making sure you let the item dry completely after you wash it, and checking the manufacturers instructions to make sure the fabric won’t loose its strength. In general, you’ll want to look for any washing instructions that may be found either on a tag or in the instruction manual. If you can’t find any information, call the store or manufacturer for advice. Some warranty plans may include regular cleanings.
Next, you’ll want to remove any visible stains or sticky items. Use the appropriate product for the situation (Sticky Stuff Remover and Super Spot Remover). This step may take a while, especially if a stain was hidden between cushions or if you haven’t washed your upholstery in a while. If there are sticky items such as crayon lodged into the fabric, you will need to use some UPOLSTERY CLEANING TIPS for removing CRAYON. Try to remove any crayon with your fingernails or a pair of tweezers then apply a product that is designed to remove sticky items (Sticky Stuff Remover). Leather also needs special care. You probably won’t be able to use standard upholstery cleaners.
After you remove any stains, you’ll want to use a cleaner specifically designed for cleaning upholstery (Upholstery Cleaner). There are several different application methods. You can use a carpet cleaner that has an upholstery attachment. You can also apply the cleaner with a cloth and let it air dry. The method will certain depend on the type of product you choose. Using an electric carpet cleaner may be the easiest because it is designed to remove any excess suds so you don’t need to do an extra step.
Make sure that when you are letting your upholstery dry, you open some windows for good ventilation. If you put the cushions of your furniture back before everything is completely dry, it can cause mold and mildew to grow. If it is a nice day you may want to let your furniture dry outside because it will quicken the process. You may also want to put a dehumidifier in the room where the upholstery is drying. Mold and mildew breed in situations where there is excess moisture in the air.
There are several steps you can take to clean upholstery. You can skip the “stain removing" step if your fabric doesn’t need special attention. In general, the more you clean your upholstery, the quicker the process will be. If you wait a while, the process can take the whole day because you will be spending a lot of time removing stains. Maintaining a cleaning schedule can actually save you time.

You've just bought a brand-new set for your living room, and everybody loves it. A beautiful piece of furniture will add definition to any home and lighten up the place, but it also needs to be cleaned and taken care of properly, otherwise you will have a dingy, scruffy piece of furniture squatting in your home before you know it.

You just have to remember two basic rules for cleaning upholstery. Since loose dirt and stains are the most common factors for soiling your furniture, learning how to deal with them will save you a lot of time and money later in the future. Cleaning up loose dirt can easily be done by vacuuming or just brushing away the dirt. You have to do this as quickly as possible, though, before the dirt gets embedded in the fabric. Stains and spills can be dealt with by using a dry cloth to wipe them away and soak up the liquid.

But when you really want to learn how to properly clean a variety of fabrics, however, you need to know about the cleaning codes. There are individual cleaning methods recommended for each type of fabric, so you have to know what they are. There should be cleaning codes in one of the tags affixed to your furniture, so try to look for them. If you can't find the code, try cleaning a little spot in an inconspicuous area of the furniture to test for compatibility. Currently, there are four cleaning codes used by the industry. I will tell you about them, as well as the recommended procedures related to each code.

W ? Vacuuming and light dusting are recommended. Use only water-based cleaners or foam from mild detergents.

S ? You can also vacuum or dust lightly. Use water-free cleaning solvents or dry-cleaning solutions for spot cleaning. Be sure to avoid using products with carbon tetrachloride. Use a soft cloth and clean the upholstery in a well-ventilated area. Getting the services of a professional cleaner is also recommended.

WS ? You can use any of the recommended methods above. If using a solvent or dry-cleaning product, be sure to do it in a well-ventilated area. Avoid products with carbon tetrachloride.

X ? You must only clean your furniture by vacuuming or light dusting. Do not use liquid cleaning agents of any kind. Using water-based cleaners or solvents may cause shrinking and damage the surface appearance of the upholstery.

It is advisable to clean your upholstery at least every two months, or once a month if possible. If you have a futon for a sofa, flip the cushions over once a month, and wash the covers at the same time as well. You can use a piece of cardboard or a rubber spatula to remove excess foam. And remember to keep the material as dry as possible during cleaning; this will help keep the fabric from shrinking.
