[H987]How To Cover Acne Scars
by Naweko Nicole Dial, Naw
For decades people have relied on vitamin E to speed wounds healing and reverse the natural aging of the skin. However, is this extra slathering of vitamin E justified, or is your time and money better spent on proven scar removal technologies?

Topical vitamin E for healing scars

To answer this question, researchers have tested the efficacy of vitamin E at removing scars. Surprisingly, an investigation in Dermatologic Surgery reported that applying vitamin E to healing wounds could actually hinder the skin's repair process. In this study, researchers gave 15 patients who underwent skin cancer removal surgeries two types of post-wound ointments. One ointment (A) contained just commons moisturizing agents, and the other ointment (B) contained the same ingredients as item A but with the addition of vitamin E.

Each patient applied cream A to one-half of their wound and cream B to the other half of their wound twice a day for four weeks. Both the scar patients and physicians observed the cosmetic changes in the scars at week one, four and twelve after the start of the study.

Contrary to popular belief, in this study, for 90% of the patients, topical vitamin E either had no effect on, or actually worsened the cosmetic appearance of scars. Also, 33% of the study volunteers developed a contact dermatitis to the vitamin E. Based on these findings, the investigators discouraged the use of topical vitamin E for healing scars.

Consuming vitamin E to heal scars

While applying vitamin E to the skin in an effort speed the skin's repair process may not work, enjoying a diet rich in vitamin could. For example, a report in International Journal of Experimental Pathology found that in mice, low levels of antioxidants, like vitamin E, delayed wound healing.

To make vitamin E a team player in your acne scar repair process, you need to consume sufficient amounts of this fat-soluble nutrient. The recommended dietary allowance for vitamin E is 30 International Units (IU) per day.

The tolerable upper intake level of vitamin E is 1,500 IU per day for adults. Food sources of vitamin E include almonds, sunflower seed kernels, sunflower oil wheat germ oil, and hazelnuts.

If your diet lacks sufficient vitamin E, supplements are an option. Health stores sale vitamin E supplements as alpha-tocopheryl acetate, a form of alpha-tocopherol that protects its ability to serve as an antioxidant.

You will find the synthetic form labeled "D, L" and the natural form labeled "D". But, keep in mind that according to the National Institutes of Health, the synthetic form of vitamin E is only half as active as the natural form.

In short, in addition to buying a vitamin E cream to heal your scars faster, you can also enjoy vitamin E rich meals.

For many, acne is just something you have to deal as a teenager but for others, it can be reason enough to cause serious psychological distress. This is typically true when a teenager suffering from acne, sees just how severe the potential scarring can be. In this case, it is essential to remain calm and to act decisively.
As we are all aware of, there are many options available, both for treating acne itself, as well as the resultant scars which can be left behind. Of course, for someone who has never experienced the effects of acne, giving advice is easy but the fact still remains, the last thing you want to do, is jump the gun because as the saying goes, "look before you leap".
In so many instances, it is said that one should follow your instincts but when it comes to acne treatments, this couldn't be further from the truth. Why? Simply because if we did, we would often be inclined to opt for surgery as a first option when in fact, this should be your very last option. There are just too many other alternative options available to justify surgery and what's more, they are far less expensive as well. Yes it is tempting, especially when you see marks which look like scars, but you have to resist the urge at all costs.
The single most important need for newly damaged skin is time. Even better, one should provide the skin with plenty of moisture as well as adequate nutrition but remember, no matter how intensive your hygiene regime is, if you are not paying any attention to your diet, your efforts will have been in vain. Likewise, if you're depriving yourself of sleep, you'll also be denying your body the chance to regenerate new skin cells.
The skin is an organ that responds to your total health picture. So live well and give your skin some time. Very often, the scars diminish or disappear entirely just from the natural recuperative power of the skin.
Perhaps the most influential factor of all is one's diet as this has a profound impact on skin condition. Eating healthy is always important but if you are suffering from acne, you need to make your diet as healthy as possible and under no circumstances, should you be including any foods with a high fat content. Greasy foods will simply increase the workload your skin is already facing in its battle against acne.
If you've come this far then you ought to already be feeling good about yourself but the truth is, in addition to avoiding certain foods, one also has to increase your intake of other more desirable foods, such as plenty of fresh vegetables and of course fruit, as both are an essential source of vitamins. Ideally, no matter how much fruit and vegetables you're eating, a vitamin supplement may well be a wise decision as well.
Of course there are cases which simply don't respond totally to these lifestyle changes and if this is the case with you, then sure, proceed to the next line of attack but do try to give it a chance first. If this fails, you'll be best seeing a reputable dermatologist for advice rather than trying to navigate your way through a minefield of products. Admittedly, you may even need to move on to prescription medication but delay this as long as you can and only if all else fails, should you consider surgery.
