The first thing to do is to determine what the natural forage in the area is for your target, in this case: Sea Bass. Soft shell crabs or clams are always a safe bet. If you are using crabs, crack the shell and thread your hook up through the crab.

If you are using clams, try salting them first. It will increase their appeal and make them stay on the hook a little better. Sometimes lures will work well for catching sea bass, but you really can not go wrong with whatever the natural forage in the area is.

If the sea bass are feeding on squid, just cut up strips of fresh or frozen squid and use that. The closer you are to what the sea bass are naturally feeding, the more likely it is that they will take the bait you offer

Use #10 test line. Monofiliment tends to tangle less, but a braided fishing line will allow the angler to actually feel better when a fish bites, so it is largely a trade off. Just experiment a bit and see which works best for you.

Sea bass really are pretty easy to catch if you remember that you are going to have to be patient. Even after you hook your fish, you are going to have to let it tire itself out, and bringing in even a single sea bass can sometimes take three or four hours.

Consider the tides before you plan a fishing expedition. You are going to want to fish above the more shallow areas, so it is best not to fish on either the new or full moons.

Choosing the right time of the year is important as well. If you are in the North Atlantic region, the best times will generally be from the beginning of May all the way until the end of the summer. South of there, the sea bass may be close to shore as early as February or March each year.
