Parenting Information
by Jane Bear, Jan
Being a parent can be a daunting prospect even for the most accomplished and the most prepared individuals. Raising a child is all about having good parenting skills as well as learning good parenting techniques. There are just as many parent styles as there are a number of parents but experts believe the parenting styles fall into 4 different and identifiable styles: authoritarian, indulgent or permissive, authoritative, and uninvolved.

The first style is authoritarian; these are typically parents who seem to come off as overly strict and even bossy. Authoritarian parents believe in absolute obedience and their children are often more successful in the long run. Some children may seem afraid or fearful of their authoritarian parents, but these parents often encourage communication and encourage their children to be independent.

The permissive/ indulgent parent is at the opposite end of the continuum. Permissive parents want to avoid conflict at all cost; their belief is that the best way to parent their children is to be their child's best friend. There are only a very few rules and limits to the child, therefore, he or she will have very little discipline. This may cause problems in the future, as these children do not learn how to deal with rules and how to connect between wrongdoing and punishment.

Authoritative parenting is considered as the balanced style between authoritarian and permissive parents. Authoritative parents give their children a little leeway and choices up until a certain point. Although parents will listen to a child's point of view, ultimately the final decision will rest with the adult.

The fourth parent style is uninvolved parents. Those in this category are basically detached from their children in a way where structure and discipline is almost non-existent. They lack the desire and intention to take on responsibility either because they are incapable or circumstance is preventing them from practicing good parent skills.

In parenting, there are basic things that every parent should know. These are: being kind to your children, being a good role model, and always keeping communication lines open. Parents should never put down or hurt their children's feelings on purpose, no matter how mad they make you feel you should always work to control your temper. Being a good role model is also important, this means teaching your child how to be a good person all the time. The most important lesson that you will teach your kids is the difference between right and wrong. There is no parent better than one who is dedicated to communicating with his or her children well. Communicating does not even have to be too in depth, just talk to your kids about the important things.

Additionally, with the advance of technology and a culture that seems to cater to youth more and more, it can be a hard task for parents to shelter their children and one of the most common complaints that parents have today is that they aren't able to control all of the information that their child is able get. Protecting minors from inappropriate material on the Internet and television is a parental control task that still has no perfect solutions, however parental controls software programs provide significant assistance to parents who want to keep their children safe.

In simple terms, parenting just means loving your child and teaching him/ her to be a rounded and caring individual. Children need understanding, love, and a certain guiding hand, which will help them make appropriate choices.
