by Alvin Toh, Alv
Here are 5 important tips about choosing digital hearing aids.

1. Digital Hearing Aid Style

Hearing aids are available in a number of different styles. The suitability of a hearing aid style is dependent on the type and level of hearing loss. You should talk to a hearing professional who can determine which hearing aid suits you best.

There are 5 main styles of hearing aid:

CIC - This stands for "Completely in the Ear Canal". This hearing aid style fits deep into the ear canal and is invisible. It is very small and advanced. However the small size does limit the amount of advanced features. ITC - This stands for "In the Ear Canal". It fits partly into the ear canal, but not right inside as with CIC hearing aid. ITE - The "In the Ear" hearing aid is fitted on the the outer edge of the ear. Although more noticeable, it is much easier to put on. BTE - Also known as "Behind the Ear" hearing aid. This is the most traditional and noticeable hearing aid as it is fitted outside the ear. Nevertheless, it is making comeback as it looks similar to Bluetooth headsets.

2. Basic Features

All hearing aids have the same basic features. A microphone is used to pick up the sounds for amplification. The amplifier increases the volume of the sounds. A speaker is used to provide sounds into the ear canal to be heard All hearing aids run on battery power. The frequency with which the battery needs to be changed will depend on the number of features, the size and amount of use.

3. Digital vs. Analog

Analog hearing aids are much older and cheaper. However digital hearing aids utilize advanced technology and have a much better sound quality than the analog version. Digital hearing aids are more affordable now as their prices have fallen. They are becoming more popular and slowly replacing analog hearing aids.

4. Accessories

As with everything there are hundreds of different accessories and options which you can choose. For example many people would find a remote control very useful. This would allow you to easily make adjustments to the volume without having to take the hearing aid out of the ear. Directional microphones might also be useful as they pick up sounds from different directions. Adapters enable you to use your phone and cell phone with your hearing aid.

5. Brands

When choosing a digital hearing aid, always purchase a reputable brand. Consider how long the hearing aid manufacturer has been in business as well as their guarantee and warranties. Siemens, Phonak, Starkey, Widex and Rexton offer some of the highest quality hearing aids in the market. Shop around, compare various brands and prices to find a digital hearing aid that fits your lifestyle and budget.
