Could Slate Flooring Improve The Look Of Your Home?
by Adam Peters, Ada
Are you looking to update the flooring within your home? If so have you considered using slate flooring?

These days hardwood flooring seems to lead the way in homes across the country. However, there is one type of flooring that could be better suited to you and that is slate. Slate is made from rock and it is fantastic if you are looking for natural style flooring. It comes in a variety of different styles to suit your home and it looks quite impressive too once it is properly laid.

Looking after a Slate Floor and Installing it Properly

One of the main tings which people seemed to be concerned about when it comes to slate flooring is just how easy it is to clean. Some people make the mistake of thinking it would be quite easy to clean as everything will simply just wipe away. However, what they do not realize is that if you clean a slate floor with lots of water, it will absorb that water and that can cause problems. For this reason it is vital that you ensure that there is waterproof resin on top of the floor as this will help to stop it from fading too.

One of the main concerns when installing slate flooring is that if you do not do it properly, the slate could crack if heavy things are placed on top of it. So you will need to ensure that you choose a really good adhesive. If you take a trip to your local hardware store they should be able to give you advice on which adhesive you should use. You could even try asking the company that you purchased the tiles from as they will have the best idea of what will work best with the tiles you purchased.

Could You Benefit From Slate Flooring?

The main question you need to ask yourself is - could I benefit from slate flooring? There are advantages and disadvantages with it (as there are with everything) and so it is important to know whether it would be right for you.

The good points to slate flooring are that it looks impressive and it is slip proof. Hardwood flooring on the other hand can be a hazard to walk on sometimes and if you are using it in the kitchen for example, it could be a health risk. So slate flooring can be safer to use in certain rooms. Another advantage is that it does not tend to stain very easily and if you seal it properly you will also have a waterproof floor.

The downsides to slate flooring include that you are unlikely to get a symmetrical pattern as rock does have irregular patterns. Also if it is not sealed properly you will end up with a faded effect and it will soak in the water. There is also the risk of it chipping if you do not use a good adhesive.

Overall you really do need to look into whether slate flooring would be for you. It is generally a good alternative to hardwood and other methods but you still should mark out all of your options first.
