The Miniature Schnauzer comes packed with a lot of activity even in its small frame. If it comes to choosing a small dog breed then the Miniature Schnauzer is the perfect dog you can have at home. Being small in size doesn't make a dent in his confidence and he is always ready to take on any challenge including protecting his master's life.

A robust dog, the Miniature Schnauzer is a very active dog and his general appearance is remarkably similar to some of his bigger cousins: the giant and the standard Schnauzer. He is believed to have originated in Germany in the 1800's.

Compatibility and Usage: Originally developed as a farm dog, the mini Schnauzer although easily fulfills a double duty as a guard dog as well as a family dog. The mini Schnauzer is a born rat hunter and is also considered a natural prizewinner in any dog show competition because of its inherent intelligence. This breed is not a natural wanderer and as such can easily adapt to city life and become an excellent family dog.

Physical Appearance: The mini Schnauzer has a double hair coat and hence grooming is extremely important. They will experience hair fall and but most of the time they are non-shedding and hence proper care needs to be taken to maintain their coat and grooming should be done once in 5-8 weeks. A mini Schnauzer comes in different colors, which can vary from a mix of black and pepper to jet black and even a mix of black and silver.

Temperament: Bright-eyed, loving, intelligent, and playful the Miniature Schnauzer is a sure hit with children Miniature Schnauzer make good companions and family pets and are outstanding watchdogs and are great to travel with. Their extremely good temperament makes them a very good choice of the best small dogs for homes. They are very adorable and can easily mix with children and the elderly. Although small, they are highly protective of their owners and would sometimes even challenge bigger dogs!

Caring & Health: With a lifespan of 15 years, they are usually a healthy breed but are also prone to suffer from kidney stones, liver disease, skin disorders, von Willebrand's disease, diabetes, liver ailments and cysts and hereditary eye problems. Never overfeed the Schnauzer as they have a tendency to gain weight and become obese. They are also prone to hypothyroidism during the when they are between the age of 2 to 6 years old.

The wiry coat needs combing and brushing daily. Since they are non-shedders, they are a good dog for allergy sufferers. Regular cutting of the nails and brushing of teeth is also necessary for this breed.

The mini Schnauzer is an excellent dog, which can adapt itself to any kind of environment. Whether you are staying in a palatial home or a two-room apartment, he can easily adapt to his surroundings. Unlike bigger dogs, he doesn't require too much of space and hence is preferred as a small family dog. All he will ever need is your love and care!
